Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: fleece shows

Heather,

May I suggest contacting Connie Alexander or the Show Rules
Committee. Her email is

aobashows@hughes.net

Hopefully she can help you.

The SRC are the folks that can
explain your fleece situation. Hopefully they will be able to
explain what happened or speak with the people that judged, so this
doesn't happen to someone else. I know it doesn't change that your fleeces
didn't get judged, but it may helpomeone else in the future at another
show.

Many people that help out at fleece shows are learning as they go.
Volunteers can make unfortunate mistakes.

It sounds like
someone that was perhaps inexperienced, miscalculated and read the days of
growth as over the max days from shearing date. That would be my guess.
I'm so sorry that happened to you, but I would also encourage you to
contact Connie.

[AlpacaTalk] beet pulp

thanks for all the input on beet pulp as a possible feed supplement for alpacas

i have two girls that i feel are thin (both with very young crias) and that was one of my reasons for putting the question out there - it is good to hear the "voice of experience" when it comes to what does and doesn't work.

Altho sometimes the info is confusingly conflictive, i prefer not to take any 'iffy' chances with their health and comfort. For this reason, i appreciate it when an experienced alpaca farmer suggests a proven alternative.

I also understand about starting off with very small amounts to any change to their diet.

thanks to all who contributed to this topic

That's what I figured but thought didn't hurt to ask ;-)
I show dogs and it is the same way. Get pretty ribbons for winning and get to walk around proud having the winner :-) Not to mention how it could possibly increase the value of your animals

Re: [AlpacaTalk] fleece shows

Thanks to all for info on fleeces being entered at shows. Is there money awards at shows for animals and/or fleece?

aemoss17@comcast.net wrote: Hi Marsha,

Good Question! You are supposed to use a fleece which has been off your animal no longer than one year....if you shear in April, then use a fleece from last April, 2007. the age of the animal is calculated as of the date of that shearing as well. So if my boy was 10 months in April, 2007...that is his "date of shearing" age. He might now be about 16 months old in "real time" but that was his age at date of shearing.

Touch of fleece usually stays about the same unless you were unlucky enough to bag it up with any moisture in it...then it smells musty. Also, it is possible for moths to get in after a time, so boxing up with a few bars of "Irish Spring" in the bottom...or several dryer squares helps to maintain the fleece quality.

Good luck ----showing your fleeces is a very economical and satisfactory way for a new farm to "get out there" in the beginning. I think it is always a good thing to show as many of your good fleeces as you can.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: fleece shows

Ryan,
The fleece tag clearly states
Date of this shearing: 6/12/07
Date of last shearing: 5/20/06
Growth time in days: 388

So this is where the confusion was, we had to shear 3 weeks later than
last year. But all 3 of my fleeces had the same shear dates for this
year and last, 2 were disqualified for it.

Of course I'm demanding my entry fees back, but I really wanted those
fleeces judged! They just better not have opened them up and laid them
out on the table only to have them say "Oooh, this one is DQ," then
twist them up beyond recognition they way they do...

Hi Marsha,
They only know what you tell them and basically you can only show
the most recent fleece. Fleece shows are more honor based than
halter shows because there's no way to know that the fleece entered
is 1) from the alpaca you say it is and 2) that it was the most
recent clip.

Heather,
I hope someone just mistyped/misread and thought the 2 of yours were
2006 vintage, and that they'll be giving you a refund for their
error.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] fleece shows

Hi Marsha,

I still have some fleeces for a couple years ago and I can't tell the difference.  I have been told they dry out and get brittle after a length of time, so really need to get working with them (I have saved them to learn to spin on)

Heather - is there any chance you mislabeled the fleeces with the date 2006?  I would want the show to prove to me that I had marked the label wrong, or else someone made a big mistake.
