Re: [AlpacaTalk] Short Bio

Hi Big Sky country,

This is Amanda from Across the pond. Notice how people go really quiet
.... when you mention the word 'marketing', and the idea of actually
'selling' animals? ..... I've noticed that too. I wonder if it's become
some little taboo that we just don't really talk about .... ?

I think I'm being devils advocate here, but actually selling our
alpacas? Well that's another matter isn't it and we are as small
breeders, up against the bigger breeders with plenty of spondulicks
(money) and marketing strategies .... oh and staff. And somehow, the
actual selling of alpacas is one of the quiet words that we whisper, so
well done for mentioning it, but I'm feeling really cynical lately and
I'd like to bet that you don't get many replies.

It might be more fruitful to band together with some of the other local
newbies and form a larger group for selling animals? Check out Wren
Owens set up. She seems to know what she's doing (Close-Knit Alpacas,
from Woodhull, NY).

Sorry for being so cynical. We are in a similar position to you, but
across the pond in England ... not much is that different it seems.

Best Wishes
Amanda Poyner

Linda that sounds exciting and lovely for you, but since you said you

Re: [AlpacaTalk] fiber

Hi Carla,

I would also say 2 ply, worsted which will have a versatile range of
uses for many knitters and weavers. I also think felt sheets might go
down well with fibre artists, or maybe you might use them yourself. And
Rovings are the thing for hand spinning. Good luck.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] fiber

Hi Carla
As a spinner and a knitter, have some done up as yarn and some as roving. I, personally, would have the yarn as a 2 ply, worsted weight.
Just my 2 cents worth!

Hi,

Hope someone can help me with this question. I want to send my fiber
in to be milled, however, being fairly new to the world of alpacas I
have no idea how to have it milled.

I went in and they gave me options of 1 ply, 2 ply, 3 ply, worsted
weight, sport, bulk, felting, roving and such.

In your opinions, which would be the best to have done so do that
knitters and fiber workers might want to buy it. Any advice is greatly
appreciated.

[AlpacaTalk] Alpaca Crias!!!

I finally got to be at the farm the day an alpaca gave birth and I got
to help clean up the cria, which was named Tasha, and I got to weigh it
and feed it. We have had five crias born with-in the last two weeks and
they are so sweet.

[AlpacaTalk] Short Bio

Howdy all from Big Sky country,

I'll try to keep this short. [;)] We are Jim Young & Gail Andren, JAG
for short, and have 22 Alpacas. We're located in Roberts, MT on 20 acres
near the Beartooth mountains, hence the name Beartooth Alpaca Ranch.
We've been raising alpacas for about 5 years. We volunteered at an
alpaca farm in Vancouver, WA for about a year and a half learning all we
could knowing resources would be limited in MT. We took the path of
learning from poop to profit but we are still working on the profit
part. We are on 3 sites; Alpacanation, Alpaca.com and our own site
beartoothalpacas.com. We are currently mentoring 5 newbies in our area
on alpaca husbandtry. Unfortunately they had already purchased their
alpacas [:(] but it's fun and gratifying to share our knowledge and
resources with them. We will do most anything to insure the well being
of alpacas, ours or others. We have learned to do almost everything
connected to alpacas; breeding(of course)including mobile breeding,
transportation(on a limited basis), toenails, ultrasound(we have our own
machine), blood draws, shots, shearing, spinning, knitting....ok ok I'll
stop you get the picture. Our weakest point is marketing, we sure could
use some help in that arena. Well I've babbled long enough and we need
to leave for a mobile re-breed. Thanks for you time......Love the Life,
