[AlpacaTalk] Re: SOS - cria issues

I've also seen the trick with using the vet wrap that Robin described work for a cria born with frog legs. Just make a figure 8 that goes on like she described. It helped my cria be able to stand on her own after a few hours.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: SOS - cria issues

Chrys,

Is it the back legs, front legs or both.   We have had frog legs in the back legs on two cria.   I tie them together loosly with  vet wrap for a few days  between the hip and knee.   They can get up and down with it and in a few days are strong enough to do without it.

Robin

Thanks for all of the advise. This is pretty much what we are doing. I'll just keep feeding and praying.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: SOS - cria issues

Hang in there Chyrs! I know every 2 hrs is hard for the first few days.Once she is taking more from the bottle you can extend time between feedings.First at night 4-6 hrs depending on how much or little she takes.I didn't mean to sound rude but it sounded like you hadn't fed her but once yesterday and I knew she would soon crash on you...With dysmature cria its a waiting game to see if the lungs are developed. They are born with enough Surfactant in the lungs for 3days so the body has to be able to make its own surfactant by then or they go into pulmonary arrest. It is possible to do a transfer from mom to cria but it is risky for both and VERY expensive to have done.It has to be done by specialist in a vet school setting. With a bit of good luck she will be a survivor.... I wish the little one the best. Tina in Missouri at Elkhorn Alpacas

Weighing the cria daily at the same time of day will tell you if she is eating enough.

I know you don't want to call a vet. If it is within your means to do so, I'd do it. Aside from that, feed her, probiotics, and supportive care for these first few days does wonders.

I agree with Darlene.

Just feed the baby, and I bet she'll stand eventually. Had a premie with the same issue three years ago : Born and couldn't stand. After a day or two, I went out to feed, and there she was, standing and nursing from momma.

Keep us posted.
