Re: [AlpacaTalk] Sick Cria

I'd try bottle-feeding him until you can get the vet out.  Sounds like he's sinking.

[AlpacaTalk] sick cria

hi - what's the heat like where you are?  We're having the worst heat wave since 1941 and my six week old cria, Marino,  got dehydrated - i thought we were going to lose him, even his mama had walked away from him - i spray his belly and legs with the hose to keep him cool, feed him pedialyte with a syringe every 1/2 hour and give him a bit of lama-pro vitamin paste twice a day - he is up and about now, nursing, and active - still not breathng quite right but seems to be improving each day - this heat is a real killer, i've never seen anything like it.. Our vet only comes into the valley on Wednesdays so i will have him come and check his breathing for me - but until then, it's just me and Marino.

good luck with your cria - i hope there's a vet close by for you.

I'm stumped, too. Doesn't sound like constipation so much, to me. I'd ask a vet. :)

If he were mine, I would take him to the vet or call them out, asap!  My understanding is the little ones are more vulnerable to heat related deaths than any other age group.  Good luck!

Mom has lots of milk and is a really good mom.  He is just not feeling well enough to want to nurse. He will only drink water and has started not wanting that too.
Poor little guy I think he is in big trouble.

I'm fairly new to Alpacas but my first thoughts are: does momma have milk?  is her milk good? will she allow him to try to nurse?

I have a 4 week old male cria. Was doing fine yesterday. This morning weak, lethargic not nursing. He is drinking lots of water. He is unsteady on his feet. Acts like he has a tummy ache. Seems to be constipated. We gave him 10 cc of Karo syrup, gatorade and two small warm water enema's. He passes the water enemas after about 30 minutes but it is just water no stool.
He still is not interested in nursing but he will walk to the water and drink. He prefers to lay down but will walk a bit. No fever. Any ideas on what else we should do. My thoughts are he got dehydrated yesterday playing and it has caused a chain reaction. I am pleased he is drinking water but am concerned about him not being able to pass any stool and not nursing. He did pass urine twice so far.
Ideas?
