Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Grouply

Given everything I've learned about Grouply in the last two days, I
would strongly advise against joining this thing. Give away my private
passwords to some site I know nothing about? Yeah, right!

I'm on quite a few yahoo discussion groups, and one of them is private,
our local breeder's affiliate group. Not that it's especially secret,
but it is just for members.

These invitations that we received from Joanne (or Grouply itself,
apparently, in her name) were only sent to member that have posted to
the group, as far as I can tell. I have the group set so that only
moderators can access the membership list. And members can also hide
their email addresses (though doing so allows posting only via the
website).

So I think we're all relatively safe, if we don't join Grouply.
However, this might explain the increase in spam email I'm receiving at
this email address.

[AlpacaTalk] new member intro

Hello All

We are new owners of a very nice herd of 7 alpacas here in SE Virginia. We
want to meet new friends, and get involved in shows, marketing, breeding,
and all aspects of the alpaca world. I would love to hear from any others
in SE VA or NE NC in particular. We would love to visit some other farms
and get some ideas and learn, learn, learn. We are planning to breed two
females this fall.

We have been exploring alpacas for about 5 years, then 2 years ago acquired
a small farm of 32 acres and some facilities, so everything has finally
worked out and 6 of the 7 are here! The last female is being bred before
she comes to our farm, she should arrive by the first of December.

We have read and listened and studied, but have little on-hand practical
knowledge. We have 6 horses, dogs, exhibition poultry, and have had goats
in the past, so we are not afraid of the dirty work!

I have some pics on the alpaca pages and in the photo album on my website.
We welcome questions, suggestions, and farm visits!

So far I have had no contact from Joanne. She's never posted on the
group or contributed in any way. Looks to me she's a troll. I'll give
her a few more days to reply, but as of now, I consider her a
spammer/troll. If I get no communication from her within a week (given
the weather in the south lately) I'll remove her as such. Maybe give
her a bit more time since her profile says she's in Alabama?

[AlpacaTalk] RE: Grouply

I got an invitation to join grouply on another yahoo list I am on.
There was a discussion about it and I am afraid I do not remember the
particulars except that it was something awful that shut down a few
folks computers and caused some major problems. It does some sort of
automatic phishing when you hit reply. It also apparently steals your
address book and sends out invites in mass mailings that appear to have
come from you. So the person that appears to be sending the invite can
be totally innocent, not involved at all, and not know that invites are
going out in their name. apparently it is a cancer that is spreading
thru the yahoo community thru members address books. I got my
invitation from my other yahoo group several weeks ago. I did not get
one thru this list. So it must not go out to the whole list, maybe only
to individuals in a person's address book. It sounds like it is also
set up to go into blogs, perhaps that are listed in a person's address
book. I am totally computer illiterate, so have no idea. But the
thought of my personal posts to a yahoo list being made public gives me
the creeps......I was under the impression that yahoo lists were
available only to members of that particular list?
