[AlpacaTalk] Nasal Membrane in New Born

Hello All

It has been a while since I have been here. I am in need of the
collective brain.

My one and only cria was born on Monday. The birth was not easy. It
was approximately 4 hours long. I had to reposition the cria. She
only presented her left foot. Needless to say her little head was
against the right side of her body. Got her all situated and the Dam
got her out with one big push. The dam is 200 lbs and the cria was
12.4. Needless to say there was not time for her to hang and drain
her fluids. So I did it. Got fluid out of the nasal and mouth. She
is having difficulty breathing with her mouth closed. (I am hoping
that not ever one responds with CA)

We got her up and nursing with assistance and she eats like there is
no tomorrow. She is actually gaining .25 lb or better EVERY day. NO
weight loss from day 1 to day 2

She does hold her breath to eat and she sound like a snot nosed kid
when she humms.

Took her to the Vet Monday evening. Had a chest x-ray done...no
pneumonia but we put her on Nuflor just to be safe. My Vet seems to
think that a membrane at the back of the nasal cavity did not
dissolve prior to birth and she thinks that it will given enough
time. As a massage therapist I recognize that her facial and cranial
bones are a little bit out of alignment and I started to work on them
as soon as I could. I can see that the structure of the face has
changed quite a bit in the last few day.

On Tuesday evening about 4:30 she began to drain a white/clear fluid
out of the left nasal cavity. This continued for 24 hours. She now
can breath with her mouth closed while resting or exploring. If she
exercises..pronks...she needs to mouth breath and she still holds her
breath while nursing.

Is there anyone out there that has had experience with nasal
membranes that have not dissolved before birth?????

[AlpacaTalk] Nasal Membrane in New Born

Hey All,

It has been a while and I am in need of your collective brains.

Had my one and only cria on Monday....A girl @ 12.4 lbs. She had a
difficult birth. Her head was on the right side of her body and she
had one foot tucked unter her. I got it all moved around and the Dam
pushed her out. I very quickly realized that she was having trouble
breathing. Got her going and got her to nurse with assistance. It
was off to the vet to see why she was mouth breathing. No fuild in
her lungs but she is on Nuflor just incase. Vet seems to think that
it may be a membrane in the back nasal cavity.

She is eating well. Gaining .25 lb pd even @ day 1
Up and using her leg for a good little run about all most every time
she is up.
She discharged a lot of mucus on tuesday and wednesday on the left
side but nothing today. She still sounds like a snot nosed kid and
is breathing more often with her mouth closed.

Just wondering if anyone had gone thru something like this....

Toni

[AlpacaTalk] More Eye Problems

<<I think it was just a slow day on the site. I know I haven't been
posting, we've had quite a busy day around the farm. We have a cria who
had an eye that was clouded over, then it started growing. It got
bigger and bigger every day despite ointments and antibiotic
injections. I was certain there was a brain tumor or something, but the
vet came out and removed the eye. The poor dear had somehow gotten an
infection in the eyeball itself. Let me tell you how gross that was.
But, no amount of ointments or antibiotics were going to save that eye,
and at least now she's no longer in pain, and has the opportunity to
heal and grow up fairly normally. This baby was only 10 days old!

Our vets say this year is a very bad year for dystocias, crazy weird
things... We agree! Best of luck everyone!
>>

I am so sorry Heather. Wow! Is there an epidemic going on? Thank
goodness it wasn't a brain tumor. Was the eye injured/scratched and
allowed infection in?

But I am especially struck by your saying your vet came out and removed
the eyeball. My vet told me that if we couldn't heal up my girl's eye
she would have to be transported to the University for surgery. I asked
if she couldn't do it and she said it took a lot of specialized
equipment. I have no trailer nor even a vehicle large enough to haul my
pacas around in. I used to haul them around in my Isuzu
Trooper, which I no longer have. And the University is several hours
away from me, so this is not an option I am even remotely happy about
having to consider. I especially hate to think I am going to torture
her as well as myself for the next 6 wks only to find out we have to
remove the eyeball anyway.

I am wondering how I can tell if we are making any progress. It has
been about 10 days and I can't tell much difference in her eye at all;
if anything she is keeping much more closed than when we started.
Sometimes I can't even get the drops in as she has her eyelid clamped
shut (it seems - I don't know if she is doing this on purpose or if her
eye is closing on its own? It is more relaxed and easier to dose in the
mornings and as the day progresses it seems to get harder and harder to
get her eye open enough to squeeze a drop into it. I am thinking
perhaps the pain increases during the day with the light - tho we have
been thankfully overcast (thanks to Faye) for the past several days and
I have not made her stay in the barn.....which isn't that dark on a
bright day anyway.

You must have a great vet!

Warmly, Janice in GA
