[AlpacaTalk] Urinary Stones
Hello Everyone,
I'd like to give you a heads up to a problem that has occurred in the
Northwest (at least that's all I know about). There have been at least
13 males, mostly weanlings approx. 8 mos. old, who have had urinary
blockages caused by a stone. Most have died from this but a couple
have lived. Two llamas have died as well.
We don't know what has caused this problem yet but I wanted to ask
that everyone spend some time in the boys' pastures checking that each
one can pee. I was not able to save my little guy despite heroic
efforts. Treatment at OSU is a very expensive operation that has
outcomes that rob them of any kind of quality of life. We chose not to
go that route.
Check out the forum on AlpacaNation for a discussion of this problem
and some possible treatments.
