Re: [AlpacaTalk] Nitrates in Hay

It has been a very long time since I was concerned about nitrate/nitrites. I can't even remember numbers so I'll have to re-learn everything. I know this is an issue with the drought last summer. I hope some people with good understanding will chime in!

With the droughts and wild fires, good quality hay has been hard to find. For those who test their hay, I would like to hear if anyone has found that the nitrate levels have been high due to high fertilization as well as the stress/drought has done to the hay. I've had numerous hay analyses done over the last few years, and never had hay come back with a "positive" nitrate reading. Had Holmes Lab do the additional Nitrate (NO3) test to get specific levels and it was at .258% or 2500 ppm. I'm most certain this is too high of levels for alpacas, but would like to hear what others think.
