Re: [AlpacaTalk] Blanket Project

:) This reminds me of a certain Mid-Willamette Valley breeder who, when
noticing the decrease in sales of WABA pellets after the Woodland
Meadows Blend continued to gain customers, went to our mill and had
their own "Corn-Free" pellet made.

Come on people!

[AlpacaTalk] Blanket Project

Hi everyone,
Please, please, please...do not go to those we have spent so long
working with and say "Oh, I have some fiber, please make me some.....
We have worked a long time trying to give this gift to the alpaca
community. We are working towards having a place where we (the alpaca
community) can receive dollars for our fiber. This type of project
takes resolve, time, effort, determination, commitment, dollars, etc.
It is not finished!!! Why do you think we are eliminating various
parts of our lives in order to have the time available to go forward
with this??? Why are we willing to give away some of our alpacas???
(By the way, we are NOT giving up our time on our Harleys). Rather
than sitting around on my years-old fiber and dreaming of only making
"high-end products" with the fiber, we are actually doing something
for our industry here in the US.
The reason for this post is that at least one farm has attempted to go
direct to those we have been negotiating with with the idea that there
is currently the availability to make whatever "high-end" product they
want for their fiber (sort of makes me understand why they have SEVEN
YEARS of their fiber sitting around on their farm). This type of
behavior could easily be counterproductive toward the progress already
undertaken. I here and now ask them, PLEASE, send some of your fiber
to us; this project may not be the high-end results you want for your
hard-earned fiber, but we need a starting point (blankets) and will
work up from there.

Second point---After the email last night, I wanted to call the
project quits. Carol talked me into staying for the long haul because
she knows how much this means to me, other alpaca farmers, and to our
alpaca industry.

Third--We will now be accepting all colors of fiber. As long as we
are going to do this thing, we may as well open it to all and really
give it our best. Thanks so much to all that have donated and those
who have sent word that fiber is on the way. Please let me know when
you donate if it is ok to put your name/farm/link/etc. on our website
as a supporter of the "Blanket Project". Carol (my wonderful wife and
without whom we would not have a website) graciously offered to set up
a page or so dedicated to this project.

Thank you all so much,
Peter

Again, please send fiber to:

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Elite Alpacas and Hartmans

Good questions, don't know the answers though.
I don't think Hartman's is a good comparison though.
Hartman's to me is a last ditch place to sell alpacas. It is a livestock auction house, and unless things have changed considerably in the last few years, it has not been known for taking care of the animals. Owners generally aren't there as it is on consignment so little information given to potential buyers.

It would be nice to hear if things have improved there.

Thank you, Dianne.

I truly hope that it helps the vets and universities isolate this virus. Lets keep working together.

Janet,
A simple "Thank You" doesn't justify the tremendous amount of work you are putting into this project. It is a great resource.

Thank you,

I have spent the day working on a website that will make it easier to
collect and disburse information. There are still a few more pages to be
added, and I will be working on them this evening.

http://mountainashf arm.com/News <http://mountainashf arm.com/News>

Please help spread the word. We do need to have everyone work together
on reporting cases and deaths.

As Amy McCroskie, AOBA President, stated in a recent email:

". I too encourage everyone to share any reports of it so that we
can attempt to figure it out on a national level. It is always difficult
to lose a cherished animal, but a full necropsy and diagnostics through
tissue samples are critically important in order to save others in the
national herd. As you mentioned, there are quite a few national vets
working on an answer but so far, nothing definitive has been reported.
With this many brilliant minds working together, I feel sure there will
be an answer soon."

Please look through the site. Feel free to send a copy of this email to
anyone that you feel will benefit from it.

Thank you for your help and support in working through this issue.

[AlpacaTalk] Elite Alpacas and Hartmans

Curious as to the thinking about Hartmans and the auction/sale of
Elite Alpacas being dumped during this sale... Some farms have at
minimum 30 females being sold--if you add up the numbers it is
alarming as to how many animals will be sold this weekend. Is this a
dumping instead of culling? Who will be buying hundreds of males?

How does an alpaca farm (med to sm.) sizes compete with some of these
very large farms unloading their females and males at inexpensive
pricing, especially if you base it on past Hartman sales or the past
prices of auctions this year.

How does farms listed on Alpaca Elite .com with stellar breeding
programs get a potential new breeder to buy from them when they can
get one of their alpacas for a few thousand? or less? at a sale like
Hartmans?

Will this not hurt the current alpaca market?

I find it troublesome and I'm a bit confused about it.
I know there are lots of questions and I'm not asking anyone to answer
them all, but would really like to stir up some conversation about it.
