Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpacas in Rose Parade

Most local/regional shows run $25-$30 per dog, some of the performance
events may be a bit closer to $50. Now for speciality's or nationals the prices
are higher. Now of course there is no need for stalling so that saves a bit
and since you don't need to stall the animals on the grounds a show can
accommodate many more dogs than alpacas in a venue. The last show I went to was in
West Palm Beach, FL and there were over 1500 dogs. Interestingly though most
dog shows charge and entry fee to the general public and in my experience
there is no lack of "lay" people wandering around asking questions even with
being charged a few dollars at the door.
And since we are on a subject of things I don't understand why do I have to
pay a membership to ARI? I see paying to register my farm name and for
registry services I guess again it is just not what I am used too.......oh well
c'est la vie.

wasn't capable of doing that. 'Nother discussion!

Sigh. So many problems with AOBA. So much crap they've done. And if
you read the bylaws, you'll find the membership isn't entitled to

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpacas in Rose Parade

Hi Heather,
The AKC does not charge any type of membership fees. You aren't a "member"
of the AKC the way you are a member of AOBA. The AKC registers dogs and
sanctions/regulates events it is not really a "breeders organization". The AKC
has 500+ member clubs you can be a member of a club and that is where you would
pay membership fees depending on the club. You do not have to be a club
member to participate in AKC events and non-sanctioned clubs can hold some AKC
licensed events. The AKC Gazette runs about $25/year.
Now the thing to take into account is that the AKC is a registry, its
primary function is to hold information and to regulate dog shows/events. They
generate over $30 million a year in registration fees alone! There total income
for 2007 was over $70 million with a $10 million surplus. The AKC does a lot
now in promoting pure bred dogs and responsible ownership, they are also
very active in fighting breed specific legislation and in canine health
research. But those are all things that grew over a 120+ year history.

The thing I have always found odd is that ARI registers our animals but our
show records are at AOBA, it just makes more sense to me for those two things
to be housed together....maybe it is just because that is what I am used to.

You can search for show results online at AKC.org. If you want all the show
results for the last month sent to you on cd it is $65/year (12 disks). You
have to figure there are dozen if not hundreds of AKC sanctioned events
every month from conformation to agility and obedience and hunting trials so it
is a load of information.

Nope, I never saw it or received it, either. It seems as though the
only messages I'm receiving from AOBA are why I should renew my
membership and what great benefits (opportunities to give them even
more and greater amounts of my money) that I receive from that
membership!

cash can have the money applied to their AOBA account, can have it
redirected to contribute to a different AOBA project or request a
refund.

I agree, Heather. I'm now wondering what they are going to do with the
Rose
Parade Float fund.

Well, I wonder about that. I admit I haven't done any research, but
what about non-profits like the Nature Conservancy and others that
have publications to help find their projects? I don't know the
answer to that. What about other breeder's orgs, like AKC or what
have you? Do they need a for-profit because they have a magazine? I
don't know the answer to that, either. But somehow, I just don't
believe all of what "They" from AOBA tell us, because of so much
hanky panky and the "dangerous ethical environment" there...

Nope, I just don't believe it.
