Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Mineral

i use stillwater 104 for alpacas and llamas, they eat them up more in the
winter time, but I have used them for years, and my alpacas seem great!

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Shearing Pregnant Female

Hi Chrys,

We use Steve Murray who uses a set of ropes and drops them very gently and
quickly does the shearing. We have had girls who were due almost on the day
of shearing come through it with flying colors. We do all the girls of a
similar color nearby to the "victim" of the moment and I think the nearness
is a help. Everyone is just fine. Don't let them "drop:..use a shearer who
can gentle them down as the ropes are being tightened. Steve is strong
enough to sort of put a hand under them to support them as they are
stretched and brought down.

They do as well as the rest and are, I'm sure more comfortable out of all
that fiber!

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Shearing Pregnant Female

I have set up my shearing appointment and have some concerns about one of my
pregnant females. Based on the ultrasound, she would be due about 5 days
after I have the shearing scheduled.

Is this a problem? Would it be better to hold off on shearing her until
after she has had her cria?

I want to make sure mom doesn't have any issues that could have been
prevented.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Shearing Pregnant Female

One year I did not load my preggie girl up in the van to go get sheared
as she was really stressing about being loaded. I skipped her and
sheared her with scissors that year.

Another year, when I finally had a shearer that would come to me (had
enough animals) we sheared a preggie and she had her cria the next day -
a premmie that we had to bottle feed.

But I wouldn't think 5 days would be an issue and depending on the heat
in your area at that time might help her be more comfortable and have a
less stressful delivery.

Congrats on the upcoming event :-).

Warmly, Janice

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Mineral

I use Dr. Evan's mineral blend, available at Blue Seal. It was expensive ($70), but I've still got my 1st bag 18m. later with 5-8 animals. I would say that any blend made specifically for llamas and alpacas in your area (due to regional mineral differences) would be fine, however, I bought 2 females (nursing moms) from a farm that used a different blend and a week after they got here 1 was off and had a high fever. A mineral panel showed both of them severely deficient in several minerals (Cal, Mag and Phos). When I checked the label of the blend the other farm was using I saw that it didn't have nearly the amount of minerals recommended, though it had other good things like probiotics. The Dr. Evans field manual (any alpaca owner's bible) provides a list of daily recommended amounts, so whatever blend you find, compare them. I think you'd be pretty safe with Stillwater, Dr. Pough or Dr. Evans' blends, but I've only used Evans.

Good luck,
