Re: [AlpacaTalk] Minerals / Copper

Thank you Jess I rarely have time to look things up for referance.I am greatful for you sending the information. My vet and Dr.Anderson have both told me treat them like a sheep. But remember some sheep feed, supplements can be medicated--I always tell people that it has to say non-medicated.The things they treat sheep feed with can kill an Alpaca.I use a semi-soft sheep block for my minerals.I tried every one of the minerals I could find and my alpacas hated them all..So I put out the blocks and everyone including the dogs love them.In the spring threw to cold weather-we do not grain. We have alot of pasture. They get fat enough on the grass & hay.So it is a must to have a mineral source they will eat.

Actually, the generally accepted copper requirements published for alpacas (and llamas) including recommendations by Dr. Van Saun are nearly identical with NRC recommendations for sheep, while only about 60% of NRC recommended levels for goats.

Main point is that a sheep feed contains very acceptable levels of copper for llamas and alpacas, while a goat feed contains potentially toxic (to llamas and alpacas) levels of copper.

Still, soil minerals, forage testing, etc all need to be taken into account to quantify overall nutrition being provided and to determine the need for, or content, of any supplementation.

Because they are ignorant. (I am included in this generalization) Is this the answer you were waiting to hear?

I appreciate you bringing up the subject, really.  But the exclamation points are getting old.

I will do better research regarding copper, and will have labs run on the one girl I am feeding broodmare supplement.

I do know that alpacas require more copper than sheep…….closer to goats but not as much as horses or cattle, so if I feed anything not labeled for alpacas, I will avoid those labeled for cattle and probably horses, too.

            Thanks for bringing this up.

To anyone out there with skinny animals, please disregard my advice to feed Calf Manna or Broodmare grains.  While it appears to be working for us, I would not want anyone to have negative results due to my ignorance.

[AlpacaTalk] nutrients

I have been searching for more info on soil copper levels, and it's not easy to find. I suppose we must contact our state Agirculture Extension for the info, and request a copy of the analysis from our hay growers. I can't believe we haven't done that...

I did find one grower online, from the same region as our grower. He has the report on his website, and for his 2nd cut orchard grass, the protein is far lower than the recommended level for alpacas. It is reasonable that our hay is probably similar in quality.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Minerals / Copper

To answer your question, most are unsure what the copper values are in their area and they are looking for input.   Yes, they should be concerned with copper and minerals in the feed and supplements.  That is why it is good to bring these topics up so they are aware.    Vitamins and minerals get tied up because of ratios in the soil which effects the grass and the hay.    So why, because they are unsure and are looking for exacts but there are no exacts.

I suppose because it is an essential nutrient. It is only required in trace amounts, but deficiency is as dangerous as overdosing.

Farms that are on drylot or where pasture grass is limited, the feeds must have some copper added.
