Alpacas have different needs than other ruminants. I recommend NOT
running them in the same pastures, and providing free choice alpaca
mineral mix at the very least in addition to free choice hay. We feed
2nd cut orchard grass. Other areas have other grass hays available,
but you want something with around 12-14% protein. Many people feed a
pelleted feed formulated for alpacas.

Alpacas have higher need for selenium which will kill your goats, I
believe. Not enough will kill the alpacas, or at least make them sick
and weak, and affect fertility.

[AlpacaTalk] Mineral

OK I am just starting up, do not even have Alpacas on my property yet. Do
they need minerals like goats do? I give my goats free choice mineral and
kelp, which tha Alpacas will have access to as well. Anyone else out there
have Alpacas and goats?

Thanks for the support. I am sure Carolyn appreciates the comments. Her daughter was coming over last evening. The Scotts' have a boarder who helps so he will help, as will a couple of agisters. Allison and I will be over this weekend to help too.

I was really sorry to read this and want to pass my support and sympathies
on to Carolyn and the family. Two years ago I lost my husband suddenly (and
unexpectedly), so I have a sense of the many feelings that takes over.
Mainy, it seemed unbelievable and totally devastating. I still have dreams
that resulted from that loss (my mind has apparently not fully accepted it).
I wish I were closer; I'd do chores for Carolyn and cook for her. It took me
6 months to just be able to function. I hope those near her can pitch in and
help out. For Carolyn, I send a massive cyber hug.
