Re: [AlpacaTalk] Fiber Arts Festivals

Lori,

Check the calendar on the Alpaca show website, here:
http://alpacashows.com/upcomingshows.asp
Most of them are halter and fleece shows, but some also have fiber arts. I know AlpacaMania in October will have a fiber arts display and sale. We are still working on the details, but soon be available on our website at http://alpacamania.net.
I hope this helps.

cheers,

Hi Heather,

I have no preference, but will offer a comment. If I was thinking of
joining this (or any other) group, how would I know if I'd be interested or
not? If I could see the nature of previous posts without joining, I could
decide whether or not I wish to join.

Just a thought...

Hello everyone! It's me in my moderator hat.

When I started this group in January 2004, I chose to allow members to
hide their email addresses. I didn't realize (or didn't care at the
time) that this would disallow the use of polls on the group. But an
issue has come up that sort of begs for a poll to be taken. So I'll
just ask everyone to give me their opinion.

Regarding privacy... some people have a wish for privacy in their
identity. I ask for limited personal information to join the group,
because I feel we're peers. I don't think I'll change that aspect, but
one of the current settings of the group is that anyone, not only
members, but anyone, can read the group posts and archives. Should this
be restricted to only members? It would preserve some privacy in that
only members could read the group postings. And you are free answer
privately or on publicly, whichever you prefer.

Thanks!
Heather

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Spin-off questions.... My fiber is a mess!!! Can it be salvaged?

Sorry, I should have said what I have :)
It's black huacaya. And it's in clumps all ove the bed. I think
there are some larger sized ones, but I can't tell if it came from the
neck or legs or back. This is a first shearing for him, so they said
it was all prime and put it all in the same bag.
I can see that there are shorter areas and longer areas. Can I take
bunches that are sort of still together and submit them? I can see
where the cut ends are all hooked together still. But there arent too
many of them.
How clean does the fleece have to be? I know that I need to get the
hay flecks and any seed heads out, and also the small 'seconds' from
the shearer, but there are a lot of very small specks.... that really
show up on black!
thanks :O

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Spin-off questions.... My fiber is a mess!!! Can it be salvaged?

Are you looking at a huacaya or suri? Huacaya tends to come off in a ane-piece-blanket better than a suri but maybe not if your shearer just sheared and didn't know you wanted it sorted. I would recommend you clean as much hay, debris, VM out as possible, then clean it again. Lay everything out like you have done, let your eye tell you what is the blanket (best fleece). You want your fleece to be consistant, clean and appealing to the eye. Don't be afraid to pull lots of that less appealing, courser, odd colored, inconsistent fiber out. They do judge on the weight but more important is the grading of what the judge has in front of them. I have skirted and reskirted and reskirted fleece before I sent to a show. Now I have learned to do most of the work BEFORE the paca gets sheared and let the shearer know this fleece will be going to a show. They know what to do from there. Have fun!! There is no better way
to get to know your animals than to skirt, sort and examine their fleece. Once last thought-if you don't feel comfortable sending in the whole fleece--try a spin-off-- you'll only need 2-4 oz of the best you can find in that pile on your bed.

Hi all,
I would like to enter my fiber to a few spin-offs. But, being a
newbie, I didn't watch carefully enough when the shearers at the show
stuffed the fleece in a bag. I accept the fault of not being too
concerned at the time.... But now that I have it lying on the spare
bed... I can't make heads or tails of any of it!
I think I can sort of tell what the neck area is and the legs... so
I might be able to find most of the blanket areas... It is in a bunch
of clumps... not one big blanket.
Do I need to get ALL of the hay dust out of it? Being at the show, we
didn't blow the fleece before they sheared. So there is some VM in
there.

Sorry if this is long.... can I salvage any of this to send in?

Thanks in advance,
Nancy Schell
