[AlpacaTalk] More than 400 alpacas slaughtered in Sussex TB outbreak

Thought I would fw this to the group.  Sounds bad.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] The Children's Act for Responsible Employment (CARE Act, HR 3564)

It also would not have prohibited children from farm work, it would only restrict the number of hours worked to the limitations for all other industries, and prohibit them from unsafe working conditions.

I'm sure learning a lot about people lately.

Laurel, can you explain WHY you protested it?  It seems to make very sound sense to me.  It exempts family farms, so nobody can claim that their children are affected except insofar as they might be prohibited from taking employment at somebody else's farm, somebody who might not be as concerned for their safety as their own parents would.  It ensures that children are not put to work in grain silos which are extremely dangerous; it ensures that children are not required to work on tractors without roll-over bars (I sure as heck wouldn't want my kid on one!).  It makes safety for children the paramount concern in employment situations.  It does not bar children from performing any acts on a farm owned and operated by their parents, who presumably will themselves have the child's best interests at heart and would not expose them to hazardous conditions.  I'm just curious what is so objectionable about any of that.

Sorry, repealed was the wrong word, you are correct.
I heard it on the news last nite that it was going back to the drawing board due to pressure placed on the USDA.

[AlpacaTalk] Why Your Headline Matters!!!

Potential customers don't care what you have to sell or what you want.  They only care  about what they want.  And they want to have their lives improved in some way that makes them feel better.

When your headline tells them how they'll feel better, how their lives improve, how their hopes and dreams are reached with your animal or product--THEN they pay attention and read your ads.  If all you're doing is telling them what you have for sale, they're not listening!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] The Children's Act for Responsible Employment (CARE Act, HR 3564)

[AlpacaTalk] Re: The Children's Act for Responsible Employment (CARE Act, HR 3564)

Great post Laurel! This RULE will end family faming. This RULE mandates that only your kids can work on only property owned by you. If property is rented or leased they would not be allowed to work on those properties. This also mandates that all children must be minimally 18 years of age to work on any other farm.

Heather, I do not mean this in a personal or mean spirited way. Your assumption that parents are "forcing their kids to operate dangerous machinery or handle poisons" is an uninformed position. There are a number of facts that forestall your point. First, for hours worked farm injuries are the lowest in any industry that works with machinery or poisons. Second, kids that grow up on farms and work have a better work ethic, strong reasoning skills, and develop stronger leadership skills than kids with other experience. Yes, this is a generalization, but when I see a group working and talk with the person who was put in charge, it is the farm kids who usually hold that position having gained that experience at an earlier age.

You may note I am partial to farm kids having had this experience as a youth. I find I have better knowledge of machinery, how it works, how to avoid injury, and best of all a very good understanding of chemistry and how to safely handle poisons because I learned this on the farm.

When I moved to the city I hated playing football against schools from rural communities only because we were going to get a wooping and I knew this was coming when my fellow players had no clue. It was humorous to hear them whine after a game like that. You would not catch the farm kids whining.

Farm raises strong, responsible, and intelligent kids with a very good ability to deal with life. Take that away as this RULE does and you diminish opportunity for kids as urban has.

The RULE was put on a slow burn yesterday but was not dropped.
