Re: [AlpacaTalk] Similar Farm Names

Dick.

The problem with that is that there are variations. Its like $150 to
register Dragon Fly Farm. Well we did that. And then another farm opted to use
Dragonfly Farm. They are in the same state - and also do horses. It was a huge
mess. People kept calling here asking if we moved! We finally took out a large
ad in an equine publication stating we were "THE" Dragon Fly Farm they have all
known for years and not to be fooled by other imitations. LOL. It worked.
She changed her name.

three other farms using "West Wind" or "West Winds" as their farm name.
Including the one in Illinois, there is one in New York and now one in
Virginia. So, I have abandoned my use of that as my farm name and have
chosen a new one, White Lotus Alpacas, reserving "white Lotus" as my
new breeder Id and whitelotusalpacas.com , and westwindalpacas.com is
for sale! :)

That's how I dealt with it. Hopefully no one will choose to use White
Lotus as their alpaca farm name. As I said, I reserved White Lotus with
ARI, and WLA has already been reserved many years ago. I believe W L A
was also reserved, and has long since ceased to exist, so I have no
current "competition" for that naming.

[AlpacaTalk] Similar Farm Names

How do you all handle similar farm names?

I am Alpacas at Dragon Fly Farm. This was not really by choice.

We have owned Dragon Fly Farm since 1998. We bred Thoroughbreds, Selle
Francais, Paints and Ponies for a decade. Due to the decline and
suffereing of the equine industry we have decided to retired from
breeding and focus on rescue-reselling horses in need. Still focusing
on quality, but we will not be producing our own stock. We sold most of
our youngsters, gelded our stallions and sold off many. We are down
from 28 to 12 with a end goal of 8 (our old ladies!).

When we liquidated our herd we bought alpacas. It is a great industry
coming from horses. They are not slaughtered (yet), they are not
abused/neglected or suffered at the hands of terrible trainers, there
is no performance aspect to showing, they are easy keepers and eat a
fraction of what a horse does, they poop a fraction, they require less
daily care, showing is less expensive and the owners are less
crabby/competitive/back stabbing. Prices have come down, but there is
still plenty of room for reasonable profits.

Our dilema - our FARM NAME.

There is a Dragon Fly Farm (according to AOBA) although I have never
seen anything from them. There is a Dragon Fly Alpacas. And there there
is us. We want to stay Dragon Fly Farm. We have a great reputation of
charity, fundraising, supporting the locals, our sales and breeding
program is well established (in horses). We have just been approved to
open Connecticuts ONLY Alpaca only 4H group! While we are changing
direction from horses to alpacas, we are not closing our doors. We will
still do horses, just not breed them. But we are planning to breed
alpacas (hence why we purchased 16 females and 2 males). But if you
google Dragon Fly Farm and alpacas - you end up at Dragon Fly Alpacas.
We chose Alpacas at Dragon Fly Farm as it was the only thing we could
think of to get our core name in.

I am considering changing our name....but its a hard decision because
of the hard work we have put in all these years. My husband doesnt want
to give up our name. But we want to make sure that our customers can
always find us - and not our competition.

How do you farms with similar names handle it?

[AlpacaTalk] Re: ARI, Names and diacritical markings

Hello Bruce, Denise, et al,

I have registered animals on ARI with an apostrophe just this
spring. Unfortunately, that beautiful female cria died just four
months later, however, I had no particular difficulty in using the
afore mentioned apostrophe. In point of reference, as a coding geek
many, many years ago, an apostrophe hasn't ever really been
designated as a special character. Perhaps there were names too
similar in structure to allow the name you proposed. It's a thought.
