Re: [AlpacaTalk] CD&T and Ivomec shots

Can you give CD&T and Ivomec shots together on the same day? Different
areas, of course. What about to crias? I'm trying to take advantage of
shearing when they are down, it would be so much easier to do all their shots
then.

Thanks,

[AlpacaTalk] Inj Vitamin A&D dosage

Hi,
I searched the back posts and although I'm sure my answer is in there somewhere I had no luck finding it. I'm reading the Norm Evans manual and he recommends 1,000 IU/lb for vitamin D. My bottle states 10,000 IU/ml. If I have this correct, I should be giving 1 ml per 10 lb. That seems like too much. Please help me out.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] The poop on Alpaca Poop

Laurel:
I sure hope EPDs don't include poo/pee accuracy!!! Mine will end up so low on the scale that I won't have a prayer! My boys are actually deciding to go to various spots and making MORE piles here lately --so I'm not sure they're trying to cover up the others' scents as much as they're trying to claim the entire territory or something!! As for the girls and their pretty toes.....I have one girl that kneads the pile ahead of hers........it's really pretty funny to watch, but also assures she drags it all over the place...and yet she is the daintiest of all.........go figure! In any case, I'm with you on it being the urine more than the poo that causes problems....strong stuff and my shoes will attest to that, given the lovely aroma that is imbedded in them. I've been throwing raw beans in my yard - and see where they have been there since the fall is growing greener nicer grass......and weeds. I'll probably keep doing that to some degree since the animals don't have access and it beats buying fertilizer for the yard as well as giving me a better base upon which to do some re-seeding.

Thanks for your informed and humorous response!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] The poop on Alpaca Poop

Hi Nan,

It really isn't that there is a difference in the
quality of the poop, it is a difference in the accuracy of the application
to the pasture. Alpacas usually poop in one concentrated spot,
especially the boys. The pee and poo in a communal dung pile, or if there
is just one alpaca, they pretty well dump in one concentrated pile. A goat
is more inclined to take the poo on the go approach, so their beans do not
land in a single pile.

Alpacas also will pee in the same spot
that they poo. It is quite probable that the pee is causing the
"burning" you are seeing, as opposed to the poo, they just
happen to be in the same spot. Not very many livestock species are so
amazingly coordinated in their digestive and urinary habits, or the timing
thereof. Another marketing bullet? Is there an EPD for accuracy at the
poop pile. I can see it now, "Stud Bullseye has consistently sired
cria who show an EPD of 12 inches for defecation and urination accuracy,
making costs for manure management drop."

When there is
more than one male camelid in the pasture, it is an effort to cover up the
scent of the preceding pooper, hopefully confusing any females into
thinking that he is the only guy in town.

For the girls, the
communal pile will ever widen, for they have the sense not to get their
pretty toes messy, and they are smart enough to know that the stupid 2
legger will be out shortly to clean it all up anyway.

[AlpacaTalk] The poop on Alpaca Poop

Hi there,
We raise goats and are new to Alpacas. I notice that the Alpaca poop,
unlike goat poop, kills the grass and attracts bugs.

Questions:
How do you treat your poop piles?
We can just put fresh goat poop on plants, looks like Alpaca poop is caustic
and needs composting.

I am interested in as much poop info as you can give me. Do you compost
it? Is is acidic or basic?
Thanks,
Nan
