[AlpacaTalk] fertility issues

Ok. So I have this girl, who I got specifically to breed to my dark rose grey boy. She has now had 3 abortions in a row, of twins. Three times twins! All three have been aborted at the end of the 1st trimester.  She barely noticed. This time it was 80 days or so, and I haven't had time to examine them yet, but the two little sacs are only maybe 2-3" across. The little embryo/fetus is smaller than that, obviously...

No need for condolences, Really.

It's just aggravating. I really love this girl for her bloodlines and that she's true black that throws true black when bred to white and fawn, every time. But I am about out of hope that she'll ever carry a singleton to term. What to do? I haven't contacted her previous owners yet. But there doesn't appear to be any evidence of infection or any problem conceiving. She just has twins, every time I've bred her! One of those times it was to a black boy, not my rose grey, so the sire can't be a probably cause.

Any ideas?

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Micron Testing

Yocom McColl also still does the Sirolan laserscan test, which is $7.50 per sample, and is IWTO recognized methodology. The OFDA 100 is an optical scan, and is also IWTO accepted.

The OFDA 2000 is NOT IWTO accepted testing method.

The OFDA 2000 averages the micron over the length of the staple. This means that it will give you an incorrect micron for the animal's micron on shearing day. And, since it averages the micron along the entire length of the staple, while it may be the mean, it is still misleading.

Yocom McColl does scour the samples before testing, it is discussed in their website somewhere. :)

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Micron Testing

Just to clarify,
The methods of testing by the organizations listed below are quite different.  Olds College for instance uses a method that takes punches from many fibers rather than just looking at a few.  Yocum McColl also uses the results in a national data base to help with the betterment of the genetics of the American herd.  Rather an apples and oranges comparison, but gives a good quick look at price.

The Alpaca Blanket Project gives a grade with a 3-micron range for free on fiber sent to the project.
