RE: [AlpacaTalk] Condor

Hi Wendy,

I think the male that passed away last spring was Peruvian Bruxo.who was
owned by Christine Peralta of Suri Futures, as I recollect. He was a
spectacular male and his contribution to American suris should be listed as
stellar. He took our bargain basement suri girl and gave us an award
winning, absolutely wonderful white stud, Twist & Shout. We could not
afford the "Rolls Royce of girls" , but for us he drew out a really fine
quality cria from a grade girl, which is what real prepotency should be.

Denise and I were very lucky with our suris.although we did not at the time
think that 12 male suris in a row was a wonderful happening at a start up
farm.we have a proven Bruxo son, Twist & Shout.and a soon to be proven
4PCondor son, Condor's Fire Dancer. Both were born to our grade girls at our
little startup farm. I was so glad that our initial outlay at least
captured some of these top quality genetics before their sources died out!
Condor is old, but I hear that he's "hale and hearty" for the moment and his
record includes some wonderful new crias every year. He's owned by Great
Lakes Suris, which is run by some wonderful people, Brad & Jandy Sprouse.

I will admit that the price of the breedings was dear.but you definitely got
the genetic gain for which you were paying. Both boys have been
exceptional. They were straight, strong, gentle and have true untrimmed
bites. Both boys have won again and again, so I guess the genetics can be
"worth it" as an investment. Twist, born in 2005 just had his first cria in
September and Dancer will start to breed late this fall or early next
spring. He's ready.but he's related to most of our girls, so I need to find
him some "outside" girls to date.

When you start out with lots of boys, even very good ones, it is draining on
a new farm! But, in the end, I guess it is worth it.

Perhaps Heather. However I just checked Great Lakes Ranch's listing on
AlpacaNation. They still have Condor listed as a breeding herdsire.

Hi Wendy,

Just checked the ARI listing for 4PERUVIAN CONDOR 6041 on ARI since we have
one of his sons (Condor's Fire Dancer). No, Condor has not been listed as
deceased on ARI. His DOB is shown as 1/1/93, so that would make him 16 in
January. One of our Huacaya herdsire's (Outback Jack) was born at the other
end of 1993 and still actively producing so I suppose Condor could be too.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Best place for an Alpaca Farm?

Hi Dave,
I live in Southern Maryland and I think it is an ideal climate for alpacas.
We still have all 4 seasons, but I feel we have a moderate Winter and
Summer. We live an hour south of Washington DC and about 80 minutes south
of Baltimore so there is access to good doctors, hospitals, museums and
cultural activities as well as the quant home town opportunities and
lifestyle.

In fact over the past 3 years we have not had any real measurable snowfall
of over 2" and very few snow days for the kids. It does snow here and gives
a pretty dusting or covering now and then, but is usually gone within 24
hours or less. Our summers are generally mild, but we do have a few days or
up to a week when we have heat indexes over 100. Those days are usually the
last week of July or first week of August. When I first began breeding
alpacas, people told me our summers would be too extreme to have babies.
Well I am a teacher and summer has been the best time for us to have babies.
Last year they all came in May and June, which was ideal weather. The year
before we had a July 13th baby and the weather was glorious! So we try and
have summer babies now, but really our weather is nice April through
November. Some people do have babies in December through March as well, you
need to be sure newborns get dried quickly and are kept in for a few days
during those months so you have to be extra diligent during those months.

If you decide to come explore the area, let me know and I'll help you in any
way I can.

Hi Dave,

You'll probably get lots of input on this question, but let me suggest that there are several books to help, too.  check out Amazon's list of such books at http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=best+small+towns&x=18&y=16

I've read several and they give you some very good ways of assessing without traveling everwhere.

Best wishes,

We currently live in Mass. and have lived in New England our whole lives. But,
our youngest son will be graduating from high school in a couple of years and
we've begun thinking about where our empty-nester years should be.

One goal is to find a place that is the most temperate. I've never really
liked the hot weather and now I'm liking the cold weather less and less. I
had it in my mind that the Tennessee mountains seem to fit the bill as far as
having moderate temps. I was looking at farms for sale in eastern Tennessee and
didn't see any real 'bargains' even in today's market. I looked
in the western part of the state and took note of several listings that mention
storm cellars and safe rooms. Maybe the Kentucky mountains would also be a good
place to have an alpaca farm? How about other places?

I know everyone has their own bias on the 'best place to live'. But,
on this Thanksgiving weekend, what are your views on this?

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
