They have great LGD instinct, but because they get so big, you really have
to establish dominance from the beginning.

Thanks Susan for your kind words; of course I wouldn't be offended. But
it's not like I don't already know that I need some quiet time, boy oh
boy do I know it! But sometimes life just throws too many curves at one
time and you have to do what you have to do. A few hours! If I had a
few quiet hours I would certainly sleep! I try to steal about 15 min
every night that I can to go into another room for some quiet
time.....to empty my brain so that it can think about what needs to be
done and what is the most important order in which to do those things.
Emergencies just keep on cropping up denying me the luxury of planning.
And I really hate not being able to keep up with all the animal's care
and needs the way I have in the past. I just try to get to everything I
possibly can and pray noone dies in the meantime.
Anway, SnowBall's wounds appear to be healing up pretty good. After
soaking and picking and cutting and opening up the punctures and the
tears and cleaning and squeezing and cleaning and soaking in goldenseal,
the pus seems to be gone and the wounds healing up. They are clearly
not the nice clean slashes I originally saw; they are ragged and torn
and have several puncture wounds. Noone seems to think my rooster
suspicion holds much water so I guess he is off the hook. Other than
the missing duck piece of the puzzle, the intact male, small and shy as
he is seems to be the most likely culprit - tho frankly I just don't see
it myself. But the wounds no longer look like cat slashes to me, so I
guess that has to be the cause. Guess I'll never know.
BTW, penicillin can be bought over the counter, I don't know about broad
spectrum, I've never looked; rarely if ever need/use antibiotics; the
goldenseal so far has taken care of any potential infections around
here. But I wouldn't rely on it for systemic or blood infections, tho
it can be taken internally. At that point I would head for the
pharmaceuticals.
I still think I am going to have to bite the bullet and get some pasture
protection dogs; even if this was an "inside" job! Just what I need 2
more dogs to take care of - and the time it will take to research and
find the right dogs - when I need to be turning my time, energy, and
attention to income producing endeavors. I had to get my current german
shepard dog when my 10yo was 2 - I swore then never again would I have a
puppy and a 2yo to train at the same time! So here I am with another
almost 2 yo (my husband and mother both passed away a month before she
came)and needing more dogs - Grrrr.

(Now I have to turn my attention to the horse fence they have torn down;
I had to sacrifice my rain barrels and roll them all over to the horse
pasture last week just to keep them from completely destroying the fence
- they had knocked it down enough to simply walk out over it, and I
didn't know what else to do at that moment. So now there is a long row
of white plastic barrels lining the fence end to end and propped up with
bricks. But the horses have already figured out how to paw the barrels
out of the way to get to the fence. I will have to of course figure out
a better solution)

First off, let me preface this by saying I hope that I don't offend
you with what I am about to say! It sounds like you are about toasty
fried! And though you have some things that need to be tended to in
a very timely manner, I'm thinking you need to find at least a few
hours to sit down, put your feet up, get yourself a nice drink of
your favorite beverage (be that alcohol or non-alcohol), maybe a
piece of chocolate, a cookie -- some comfort food, and just kick it
back and relax!!! If you go down, nothing will be taken care of, so
it's time to give a little to yourself..........get the kids out of
the house, too! Meditate, pray -- whatever does it for YOU! At
least try to empty your head a little -- sounds like your brain (and
body) need a rest!
After you've had a little well deserved rest, call the vet. >>
