It was 106 here and HUMID as all get out!  I might as well move to Louisiana!!!!  6:30am this morning I had to turn on the A/C just so I could get makeup on to go to our Socalpaca meeting!  WHERE has our lovely Southern CA weather gone?  You guys on the east coast must have stolen it.  : )

[AlpacaTalk] Re: LGD's

Hi everyone. Hope ya'll are having great weather like I am. It has been cool and breezy today. I picked up my two Pyreness a couple of hours ago. One girl and one boy. I read in an Alpaca magazine that this was the best combination, but my female seems to be really inteligent for 9 weeks old, while the male just wants to run around when he is out or whine when he is put in his kennel. I have put them in a kennel in my barn so they can get used to my new girls and vice versa. Will I be able to keep my llama in with them also? Do the llamas eventually get used to the guard dogs and not try to kill them???

Thanks,

Have a great night.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Summer Heat

Hi Susan,
Haven't lost one to heat, but we did have an early delivery that ended in a dead cria (too early) due to heat. :(( We take heat very seriously here.
Late term pregnant females and new crias are the most likely to suffer from excessive heat.  The little ones don't have their thermostats adjusted quite yet and will lay out in the sun way beyond what is healthy for them sometimes.  And any mother knows what torture it is being super pregnant in the dead heat of summer... been there done that before.

This particular female of ours is very prone to stress, she can't be shorn, or get too hot when she is in her last trimester- we have learned the hard way, so we watch her very closely in this kind of heat.

Seriously, I just wander around the house wanting to cry it's so hot (yup- I'm a heat wuss) and they are all soaking it up!! Weird animals... :))

Well, its a lot cooler where you are and our alpacas are fine. They have
shade but lay out in the 104-106 degree heat here in So.Cal. and it drives
me crazy - you know, the "dead alpaca syndrome". I still get a start when
I see one off alone like that. We have sprinklers on $25 battery-operated
timers (Home Depot, Lowe's) attached to the hose that go off belly-high five
times a day and that really helps them out. Those carport awnings for
$120 at Home Depot provide lots of shade while letting the breezes in. I
never ceases to amaze me how strong and adaptable these animals are.

Just curious - has anyone HAD an alpaca who died of heat stroke?

RE: [AlpacaTalk] LGD's

Hi Wendy,

I am so sorry to hear your girls were killed.  That  is horrible!  I have two LGDs……Pyrs.  I got them when they were 8 months old and they had been raised with alpacas.  They are WONDERFUL!  We love them.  They mix with our girls or boys and are very alert to anything that doesn’t belong.  They are only 14 months old and I am trying to keep them together awhile longer since they are still puppyish and want to play with each other.  Sometimes they are split between pastures and when we let them back together they are hilarious.  They really miss each other.

Anyway, I would recommend an adult dog raised with alpacas and already in guardian mode or a pair of younger dogs that have been raised with alpacas.  We brought ours home to our alpacas since we didn’t want to have them here without a job.  They were unsure of auto travel but when they arrived and saw their herd, their tails wagged so happily.

Good luck.  I am so sorry about your girls.  Do you know the dogs that did this and do you have any recourse.  My friend lost five sheep to a stray Husky and that convinced me that I needed guardians.  At the time we had a 12.5 pound female cria- our very first and the thought of something happening to her just made me sick.  Now she lays her head on our dogs……….I love these dogs.

This Spring I spent a lot of time using a shedding rake on them.  I got all of their undercoat out and trimmed their bellies to help keep them cool.  Pyrs are from a cold climate, but with some effort, can be made more comfortable in the heat.  We also put shade cloth on the barn and of course, many fans are running.

Hi everybody. I need some advice, again.(: I had my 3 girls killed by a dog attack a few months ago. Now I am trying to get some LGD puppies to train, but I have no idea what I need to do when I get them. Any ideas? I already tried getting older LGD's and all they did was run the fence line trying to escape. They even escaped out of my horse trailer window which is about 8" X 2 feet, I had to put them in there just to give me time to call the owner back to take them back to him. That was not a good experience. Anyway hope everybody is having alot of healthy crias! Have a great day.
