Re: [AlpacaTalk] Looking for Advice About Selling My Alpacas

I would agree with Laura. Making sure they get a good home being the most important consideration I'd check around to find someone who is heavily into fiber arts and if they want them I'd let them have them. If you really want to protect them make it a contract and you could add in that if they couldn't keep them for some reason you would take them back to find another home so nothing bad happened to them.
That's what I did when I took a couple horses for rescue....and they have no fiber! However, they are protected by contracts. Just an idea for you to toss around. dee

Hello I hope someone can give me some advice. I am considering selling my two male alpacas. I got them from a friend and have decided I prefer my sheep and I just don't like working with alpaca fiber as much as wool. I don't have any idea what I should charge for the guys since I got a deal from my friend. They are about 10 years old. One peach colored one red colored. One is intact and the other is not. They have nice fleeces but are not show quality confirmation wise. I have papers for them. I want to charge enough that I know the person really wants them and will be committed to caring for them but I'm not looking to make a killing on them.

If anyone could give me any advice I'd welcome it.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Looking for Advice About Selling My Alpacas

Laura,
Thanks for the advice. I was thinking that a couple of hundred would be about right but I had no basis for that thought. I just really want to make sure that whoever gets them is committed to taking care of them and thought that having to pay a little something would show that commitment.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Looking for Advice About Seling My Alpacas

I agree with Laura that it will be difficult to place older alpacas.  One way you can ensure a good placing is to ask for veterinary references.  If they don't have a vet who can confirm their suitability, that would signal to me that they don't take very good care of their other animals, which means they will probably not take care of your alpacas either.

That said, I typically charge $250 for fiber or companion-quality boys, and have gotten that amount for boys from weanling through 5 years of age.  Again, the fee is more to ensure that people want them badly enough to pay for them than to make money.  If they aren't willing to pay at least as much as they'd pay for a pedigreed dog, then I wouldn't market to them unless they can prove definitively to me that they have the resources to take care of them if they got them..

If you are more interested in them having a good home, I would suggest checking with other farms.  At ten years of age and not show quality, unless they are very easy to handle and can be used as 4H projects, I don't think you will have much luck selling them for more than a couple hundred dollars, if that.
