[AlpacaTalk] RE: Goldenseal

<<<<Hi Janice, in what form are you suggesting using the Goldenseal? A
tincture? I am looking at the Sleepy Hollow website.... Are you
talking about the Hydrastis Complete, or the Root/Rhizome tincture? Or
one of the balms or creams?

Looking forward to hearing you answer :-)

Pia
>>>>

I use the Hydrastis Complete. His research, along with the various Univ
working with his product has shown that by including the leaves (using
the whole plant) potentiates the active alkaloids in the root, making it
more potent. He was the first to discover this. Previously only the
root was used as it is the only part of the plant - when analyzed for
its constituents - that contains the active alkaloids. Yet something
mysteriously wonderful happens when you use the whole plant
instead...imagine that! BTW, same thing with whole foods vs extracting
the "vitamins" to take as pills.
Anyway, I digress.

Get the tincture. The creams and balms I am sure are good for personal
minor skin irritations, but they are not going to be as strong, nor as
effective as the tincture.

He has done some changing with his labels and is now calling the product
Hydrastis instead of Goldenseal. Hydrastis is the active alkaloid (one
of them anyway). A few years ago, with the help of the Univ of GA small
business research facility (they help determine if a particular crop has
any real potential as a viable small business) we tested about every
goldenseal product available on the market and discovered that very few
had any hydrastis in the product. Those that did had such minute
quantities as to be virtually useless. Goldenseal is an endangered
plant and is illegal to wild gather, so it has fallen out of favor as
people buy what is on the store shelves and have no luck with it. He
wanted to distinguish his product from those other goldenseal products.
I keep forgetting to call it Hydrastis.

When I ran into him last month at the Chattanooga Sustainable Ag
Convention he was telling me that he and the researchers have discovered
that the root alone is effective in lowering cholesterol and when the
leaves are added it is not as effective; I believe I am remembering that
correctly. So he now makes the root extract for that use. I may be
confusing that with digestive health, but it was something like that.
But for general all around use you will want the Complete Hydrastis. I
use it on everything - external and internal.....it is a very effective
douche and will knock Candida right out. Great for the gut as well and
is effective against many little nasties, not effecting the good guys at
all. It is an amazing plant. The Army is waiting for our crops as they
want to contract with us to purchase all the goldenseal we can produce.
They have found it to be the only thing effective against
"non-specific" diarrhea, which they loss man hours to than combat wounds.

Hope that helps.
Warmly, Janice in NW GA
PS Be sure and tell him I've been talking about him again :-).

Re: [AlpacaTalk] showmanship/halter tips?

Hi Emaly,

So you got an Alpaca! Well things are just a little different. It depends on the Judge - some do check for neutering some don't. They will ask you to show the teeth so they can check how well the teeth meet the palate. If you take your arm up under the chin and two fingers to open the split lips this usually works very well-just parctice this so your animal does not freek in the ring. They do check the fiber, first they will run their hands over the animal to check ridge cage and size of chest. next they will feel and seperate fiber in three places upper shoulder, mid. blanket, and rump. They are checking for consistency in crimp, length, and feel. Some of them even pull a small tuff out to put over their arm--they think they can approx. micron count this way--who knows! Otherwise same as llamas. Good luck!

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] showmanship/halter tips?

Hi,

I'm getting ready to show my gelding alpaca in our first showmanship

class. Any tips on what I should expect, or what I will need to do in the

ring? Will the judge check genitalia? What about fleece? Same for the

non-breeder halter class. We've shown in a shorn halter class (in August),

but never in spring when there is fleece on the animal! I've shown in llama

showmanship and halter classes for years, but alpacas are a bit different.

Any tips you can give for either class would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Emaly
