Re: [AlpacaTalk] Hijacked question about Alpaca Treats

I have had one horse now for 10 years that still won't eat an apple or apple slice but she eats carrots in any form.  Some of our alpacas that weren't handled much before we got them were the same way.  I think it is what they are given as treats when they are younger and the pickier ones stay picky, the piggies eat anything regardless of whether they've had it before.  LOL

I feed only the baby carrots and don't chop them at all.  They also love the wild mustard weeds that I constantly pull from our yard.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Hijacked question about Alpaca Treats

Ya know, it took me almost 8 years to get mine to try carrots.  Apples - they wait under the tree for deadfalls, but carrots - couldn't force 'em down 'em until about 8 months ago.  I guess Spectra was bored with everything available so she gave one a nibble and now I get mobbed if I bring one into the barn.  Obviously my garden this year will be long on carrots 'cause they can get expensive to buy in large quantities...

Hi CJ!
Some like pumpkins or other winter squash and some will eat fresh garlic.
Carrots are always a treat. Oddly enough, they haven't liked lettuce when we have offered it.

Hi Tina - which mineral block brand are you feeding?  Is it a salt block with minerals?  We tried that here and my alpacas wouldn't touch it, I'd love to know if there is one out there they like.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Hijacked question about Alpaca Treats

We used to use horse treats also BUT when everyone was having copper toxicity issues a few years back we started checking copper levels in everything the alpacas ate on our farm---also drew blood on a couple to test for minerals. The horse treats we were using had copper in them so we stopped immediately.A little
grain or fruits and veggies maybe safer. My understanding is that copper builds up in alpacas and sheep so we have to minimize the intake.I am not a vet but I have raised everything from sheep, goats, chickens, horses, alpacas.Anyone out there know more about the scientific mumbo jombo. Please chim in

We have taken horse treats and broken them into smaller pieces and the alpacas love them.  I was told my goats loved grapes, but they have never taken one from me, so that is hogwash.  Not sure what hogs like……….mostly anything would be my GUESS.

People need to remember that the tone you put on an e-mail may not be the tone intended………and if anyone is wondering, my tone is pretty even tempered and calm, in a somewhat jestfull manner. (maybe jestfull isn't a word…..spellcheck says no……….but I am sure you know what I am trying to say!)

Our grass is coming in full and green and lush and the alpacas are doing the happy dance with all four feet off the ground.  Our youngest, Lucille, is full of piss and vinegar on a daily basis and is going to get herself in trouble if she doesn't quit running up behind the old gals and pronking off of them!  Anyone else have silly alpacas!

My older gals are running out of patience with these younger tykes!

C'mon you guys -- one simple question was asked -- what treats do you feed your alpacas?  If you have something other to say than about the current topic could you do it privately?  All this bickering is getting really old.

I'm just trying to see what kinds of different foods alpacas like.  So far, carrots, figs, weeds, pears and apples...... Anything else out there?  Do the carrots need to be chopped or shaved?
