One thing I cannot be more adamant about: Buy FEED-QUALITY Diatomaceous

Janice - I don't sprinkle the DE on our manure piles because they are

cleaned daily and it would be a waste. I feed it internally to all the animals on

our ranch except for the goats because our pygmies can't have grain. I gave

the recommended feeding dosages in a prior email to AlpacaTalk on 10-10-08.

I feed it once a day mixed into their grain/pellets. You can spray water on

it in the feed to help keep down the dust if you feed it right away, but I

don't. It also keeps grain and pellets from molding, so I mix ours directly in

the feed cans with the grain/pellets right when the bags are delivered.

It helps tremendously with the flies and worms on our ranch, I swear by the

stuff and I was a total skeptic. We had tried just about everything and it

didn't work, fly predators, fly traps, etc. We are on drylot. We also mulch

our horse manure with the garden tractor twice a week, but we did that years

before we tried the DE and it didn't as big a difference. I wholeheartedly

recommend feeding DE to all your animals, at least during fly season. I think

we will give them a few months' off it in the winter time.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Diatomaceous Earth question

It's kind of like Baby powder. You just don't want to inhale it into your
lungs or the pacas. You can pour it over their grain if that's how you
intend to use it! Or if you are using it for parasite control on your Bean
Piles you just sift a little onto the wet areas of the pile when the alpacas
are not standing near it! It's not that volatile. Just use care if it's
windy or the kids throw it up in the air like mine do occasionally! Sweetly
Yours,
Nikki Brown of the "FUTURE"

[AlpacaTalk] DE questions

<<Well, I do breathe it in - most people can't avoid it and I've never
had any
problems from it. I mix it with their grain and just mix it and then leave
the feed room for awhile until the dust settles. It is only dusty when you
feed it, once its mixed in with the pelleted grains it is fine.

SUSAN OLSON
Alpaca Loco

Susan, can you elaborate? I have a friend who uses DE with her milk
goats and uses no chemical dewormers at all. I have long planned on
getting started with this, but don't know the details - ratios, daily?
2x daily (every time you feed?), etc.

Years ago I used DE to powder my house, carpets, furniture, etc to
prevent fleas. It works great IF you get the house powdered *before*
the fleas become adults. I have never used it internally. I also use
it to dust the chicken house and pen in the fall and/or spring.

By using it internally with the alpacas is that what you (or someone
else) was referring to when you said that the fly population was
noticeably reduced? Or are you sprinkling on piles? I would think that
would get rather expensive quickly.

Thanks!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Diatomaceous Earth question

Thanks.  I guess I completely misunderstood the prior email about dosage amounts.  The way I had read this was it was added to their fed.

When spreading it on the poop piles, I just make sure I'm upwind. Upwind:

good. Downwind: bad.
