Re: [AlpacaTalk] Fly Strike

I am very interested in the genetics of alpacas.

I do agree that there is a higher incidence of BEW from breedings between white and grey alpacas. And there is a higher incidence of deaf animals also being BEW.

But, a noted alpaca breeder with many letters after his name claims that only white alpacas have blue eyes. Other colors do not produce blue eyes. He also claims that white, in alpacas, is always dominant. Well, I have proof otherwise, on both counts. I also may have proof that suri fleece is always a dominant trait. but time will tell on that.

I had a blue eyed white boy born this summer and I am sure he is deaf.  Sometimes I wonder because he is so robust and seems to be the first to quote "hear a truck coming down the road"!  I think he feels the vibration of the ground and so is more alert than the non deaf!!  He is very healthy, but I wont use him for breeding so I have a teacher who wants just a couple boys for pets and he has a good home where he will be watched after closely!  I don't think all have to be deaf but is a high probability?  It has something to do with the  hairs forming in the inner ear I think?  I know we have a few out there that are into the genetics on these critters who may chime in!  I am anxious to hear what is known about this.  Of course my white boy will probably have the best fleece too!  Just watch closely and see if you can sneak up behind him and whistle or holler when he is not looking at you.  You should be able to tell soon enough.  Hope he isn't deaf, but it's not the end of the world!  He will do just fine!

Take care!

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the help with my new cria when I discovered he had a horrible fly strike. Everyone gave me wonderful advice. I lost a little sleep and the little cria had many many many exams but the fly spray worked and keep them from coming back.
Now who can tell be about blue eye white alpacas. I have read tons of material but here is my concern. He is PINK skinned. Will he sunburn? Do I need to do anything about that? His eyes don't seem to be overly sensitive to light but are they? Is deafness only possible or is it probable?

From what I have read and understand, there is a slightly higher chance of deafness with a BEW over a non-BEW. We have many pink skinned whites, and if shorn too closely, they can sunburn, but we've never had any problems in that regard.

There are a lot of rumors about BEWs, but I find them very questionable, and there is no real need to automatically geld your boy just because he has blue eyes.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Maiden mom and new cria

Thanks, Janice.  Rita is doing well,  Her Igg came back 400……….so she had a plasma transfer, today.  She is doing well…..up to 14.4 so I am confident we are on the right track.  She is urinating normally and feeling good.  Nursing and napping and bouncing a little.  I am thrilled with her.

Her sire is a beautiful rose gray Legacy son……and I had really hoped for rose gray, but she is a beautiful color and I am happy she is alive and well.  Her mom is well, also.  My four moms and their crias are together in the barn and everyone is playing Auntie to Rita.

I don’t know a lot about the Igg testing, and I don’t have time right now to check it out, but 400 seems low to me…….and the vet recommended it, so we did it.

<<< We are done for the year....3 girls out of 4 crias born. Three
white and one light brown. If we can keep her happy and healthy, all will
be right with the world.>>>

Congrats Laura! 3 out 4 girls - outstanding!. And hopefully little
Rita will be just fine.
Nerve racking to be sure. We missed an entire year; I only really have
one good breeding pair and my female didn't produce a cria this year as
expected and hoped for. It has stayed so hot so long that only
yesterday did I allow them to join one another for a little romp. They
were very happy to be together again; this pair really adore one
another. They were so sweet nuzzling on each other. I'll try again
in a week to see if there is still interest, but for now they are back
in their own pastures. My matriarch won't have anything to do with this
boy, and my other female - now 2yo, is his dtr, so that won't work :-(.
A real shame as she is such a sweet disposition and is such a beauty I
would love to see some babies from her.
Keep us updated on Rita.
