RE: [AlpacaTalk] cria not doing right---6 months old

Hi Heather,

I really do not know how the ribs happened.  It is odd, but I have been doing all the heavy work without problems. The ribs happened on the only day I had company ---a womens ‘ spinning group---served a light buffet---and on that day, when someone else did the chores, at some point I pulled the cartilage off some of the intercostals ribs on the left.  It REALLY hurts!!!  After a little more than a week, I figured it should be healed, so when it was not, I finally got it checked out.

So much of real importance is happening on the home front…We are just trying to set up the farm---this cria is now ill---and she is one of the nicest we have bred in almost 6 years---So…we are hoping she will be better-  I am just about to go out to give her her 8th dose …and then I will give her more early in the morning again.  She thinks I hate her---using her for a pincushion!

But she was just a tad feistier than last time so maybe it is having a good effect….let’s hope so!!!

I will try to address some of the political stuff when there is a minute.

I think folks are approaching all this innuendo from the wrong direction.

Let’s turn it around:

What questions would you ask someone who is going to represent your industry and handle millions of dollars.  You would want some serious background disclosed; a clean criminal record, full disclosure of prior business relationships within the industry.  I do not know where other NC members got their questions---but I went over some of the employment applications I have seen for upper level management and administrative jobs.

They think the NC’s questions were intrusive?  Well you don’t even squeak when you are asked to prove you are drug free---how much more personal can a prospective employer be than asking you to pee in a cup?

Folks keep flying off half cocked---but it will all be over soon---for one more year.

Let’s hope that the bylaws are reviewed and clarified.  At least our own Board should have a basic understanding of what they mean---maybe money should be spent to give newly elected board members some background in their own rules?

It would surely make things easier in thefuture.

Allison

Hi List,

I am banned over on Alpacasite---but it is our animal, and we are up in Washington State---Elma, to be precise.  It is not ear ticks---for two reasons—first I looked; and second, it is about 25 degrees at night here---so ticks are not out yet, and it is too wet, cold right now for tick season up here.

After talking to several folks who are local, and to Steve Hull, who knows his stuff---we think it is PEM so we are giving massive doses of Thiamine, B1…and hope this will do the trick.

Thanks to everyone…lets hope we are in time to save her…she is such a beautiful cria and such a sweetie!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Stock feed or sweet feed

I would really really not recommend feeding sweet feed to alpacas. If you're really not able to get a premium alpaca feed, my best suggestion, and it's probably a better feed solution than a lot of so called premium feeds, is to get the best quality hay you can. and feed a good vitamin mineral mix like Stillwater 104, and supplement with either alfalfa pellets or alfalfa hay, and flax seeds. Flax seed at 1 ounce per head per day.

Sweet feed or other sugar or starch based feeds can very likely result in deaths from perforated ulcer. You really don't want this, especially from your rose grey champion female on her first birthday.

Hey y'll,
First off, the crummy economy cost me my full time job four months ago. So the tight budget has become super tight. My farm is in true danger of being lost. Secondly, I have 2 males and a yearling female that I have added to the farm last summer. They are not registered but do have thick beautiful fiber.
With that in mind, I can not afford the Evans alpaca feed at Tractor Supply anymore. I have been feeding "all Stock" and "sweet feed" mixed. What if any will the ill health effects be ? I really liked the info on offering goat minerals. I am willing to add that to thier diet.
When I adopted them I thought they were going to be fine with grazing on the farm and a small amount of feed. Winter reality is they have been eating lots and lots of good horse quaility hay and I doubled then tripled the feed. I hand built them a barn and fenced in an acre plus lot for them. I have fallen in love with them. I am learning as fast I can about these wonderful animals.
