RE: [AlpacaTalk] RE: new cria/color

Hi Susan,

To the alpaca folks---bay black is the color of black coffee---but frequently, such animals have black points just like horses…however, I have a true black boy who is a color champion…and he has rusty tips by the end of the season, but is true black at the skin…no other color fibers, just black.

So, by the way alpaca folks think, your girl would be a TB---even though she looks differently on her tips.

Allison

Thanks, Heather.  Problem is, I have no patience because in my book if he is a Suri appy with grey, we have a nicer alpaca and people are already asking who his herdsire is.  For those who are interested, it is SPEA Aragon, a junior in Indiana not owned by us.  His sire is Concert Master.  We own this appy cria's sister/aunt?, one of Concert Master's female crias (by the same dam) who is just fantastic.  I would repeat either breeding if they were closer but my spouse has trouble parting with the alpacas.  Not great for sales, showing or for our breeding program.  LOL

I have a question about bay blacks too - in horses a bay is a brown coat of any shade with black points (legs, mane and tail).  So when I registered one of our females as bay black, I called ARI to ask them and they couldn't tell me.  She has a brown stomach, black face and legs and her prime fleece at the skin is TB.  I would think she's a TB but I don't want to misrepresent her.  When we registered her I think she had AFFB  "Amniotic Fluid Fleece Burn".  ; )

Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: new cria

Nope! Just gotta wait!

We have some girls who were dark brown and bay black when registered, and yes, we checked their fleece at the skin against the color chart, even took fleece samples. But they have turned into bay black and true black. We could never understand how people could make this sort of mistake so often, but these two girls' grandma was registered as dark brown, and was as true black as they come!

So, time will tell. :)

Wow, thanks, Jody for that sheep mineral link!  That is a tremendous savings.  I agree about alpaca products being much more pricey because they think we have more money - that is why I just started feeding llama pellets instead.  Check the difference yourselves - not much in the way of the product but HUGE in the way of cost!

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Pasture Vac

Everyone has their priorities and reasons for what they will pay high dollars for.  The clincher for me was that I could use this vac to clean out the chicken coops and the goat barn AND the alpaca barn and pastures.  Now, another reason that is very important to me, regardless of brand , is that I am not spreading any parasites by raking it …….everything is getting sucked up!

I like that it is lightweight enough to pull by hand, too.  Sometimes, in close quarters, it is hard to position it close enough to the coop and by pulling it by hand, I can get it very close.  My dh is fabricating a wagon type handle on it for me.

Also, time is a big factor for us.  Our kids are in HS and between school work, sports, community service, etc……..there are not lots of excess hours to spend poop raking.  I realize one after noon that we had vacuumed the barns and coops – emptied the contents into the compost pile three times and I think the whole time, all totaled was three hours.  We have never accomplished that much in one afternoon, much less three hours.

For us, time is money, too…….so it was worth it.  (Besides, it is a business expense!)

I have been planning to build one from scratch for years now. We have an AgriFab wich works great in the summer, but in the wet season, the feed tube clogs almost immediately. Poor design on the thing. Another pasture vac with the same design (not greystone) is sold by various alpaca breeders, but it costs more than the AgriFab and obviously doesn't woirk any better because of that design.

The Greystone, now, is sold with a 4 stroke engine, and is supposed to be much more reliable and, um, not burn out within a month. :) But, they are way too expensive for my taste. Think how many hours you can have of poop scooping if you pay laborers with that money!

I special order ours from Southern States Feed Store………it costs us $67 for a 25 lb bag.

I do know someone who is negotiating with a local Farm Co-op to formulate a mineral – but minimum order for custom formula is a ton………..so, looking for others to go in on it and hopefully, resales.

I don't know what the big deal is about it……our goats' mineral is a fraction of the cost!

I need to order more minerals for my guys. I have always used Dr Evans
E Formula; but thought I would ask what most of you here use.

My guy have never particularly liked these and won't take free choice.
I have to use them as a top dress on top of beet pulp so they don't all
fall to the bottom of the feeding bowls where they go to waste. The
pacas just won't eat them unless mixed in somehow. Somedays we are in a
hurry and/or don't have the beet pulp soaked and just need to feed and
get on. Those days they don't get minerals.

It would be great to be able to just offer free choice; would make the
twice a day feeding a but easier and faster.

For those who order Dr Evans formula, have you found a cheaper source?
I have always just ordered directly from him but am thinking it might be
available now at other outlets and perhaps a bit less expensive.

Thanks! Janice

Honestly, I think a whole lot of people are trying to make a buck (3X) off the alpaca breeders because of the image of wealth and the alpaca lifestyle. Yes, Minerals are minerals. They shouldn't cost more just because alpacas are getting them.
