[AlpacaTalk] Virus Update

Today we only received four reports. There was one death reported, and
one state added to those that have had outbreaks.

Total herd size reported: 4355
Total number reported infected: 2235
Total number of deaths reported: 48 from owners and 6+ from
vets/universities

Number of states with outbreak reports: 36
Number of states with deaths reported: 21
Number of farms that have sent in statistics: 140

A few people have said to me, "Shows are not the issue. Alpacas are
getting this even if they do not attend shows." While alpacas have
been infected without attended shows; the fact is that after each show
there is an increase in cases. Attending shows, auctions, and
transporting does increase the chances of bringing the virus onto your
farm. I am not saying that you should not attend shows, but if you do
strong viral precautions are necessary. I personally have made the
decision to close my farm for a few months until things settle down. For
those farms that feel the need to attend auctions, shows or to transport
animals remember that these practices may save the life of one of your
alpacas. Please read this article by Dr. Steve Hull,

Another necropsy has been added to the site,

. This one is for a 6 year old female that clearly died from the virus.
If you have a necropsy please consider forwarding it to me. These have
proven a great benefit to many of the vets. Remember that the cause of
death does not need to be the virus.

From several of the universities we are hearing that there are notable
changes to the placenta of LTP females that have severe cases of the
virus. There are several that are being tested, and I hope to hear the
results when they come in. It appears that the placentas have cracks in
them. I am not a veterinarian, but I assume this may contribute the
number of stillborns and premature births that have been reported.

Please keep the reports coming, and Join the AlpacaWatch team!
