Rick, by reversing polarity on the pharphegnugen, you have violated pharphegnugen patent rights. I do hope you remembered to pay the appropriate penalties to the inventor.

Thanks for the giggle!

RE: [Alpacasite] Hacking: Can Anyone Explain This?

Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear of your troubles :(

**********************
The only advance notice we had that something funny might be going on is
that the on-line store had a couple of "orders" sent to us that were either
completely blank (no data fields completed), or contained computer code.
The site is encrypted, so we didn't have too much concern about these
annoying "orders" at the time they came in.

The reason we are fairly certain that the access took place through Suzy's
website is because the offensive e-mail that was subsequently transmitted
from her e-mail address referenced unique information (e.g. phone number +
marketing tagline) available only on the website. Our webmaster told us to
change our e-mail password immediately to a "very secure" password
(consisting of a lengthy sequence of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers,
and special characters). Previously, we had used a password that was short
and consisted of only letters.

Can anyone with some computer savvy explain this to me? How did these
hackers discover our password, and why is the use of a "very secure"
password a deterrent? Also, other than changing this password regularly,
are there any recommendations on how to prevent our website from being a
portal to our e-mail? We also have two firewalls in place, so we feel that
our PC itself is protected...or is it? Doesn't Yahoo have a firewall of
some sort in place to protect its customers? Is there any reason to be
additionally concerned about the (apparent) attempts at accessing our
on-line store? As I mentioned, information containing credit card
information is encrypted for transmission; but are there other precautions
we should be taking as a double-safeguard? **********************

The orders with computer code are a clue, sounds like they stuffed in a
query to your database engine that returned information from the database.
If so then this would be an issue that would need to be cleared up in way
the store is programmed
If you send me the computer code in the offending order I can analyze it

If your customer email addresses are stored there then that may be the only
compromise that happened.
Anybody can send out email proposing to be anybody else fairly easily, they
would not have to have your wife's yahoo password to do that.

One way to steal passwords is a brute force method of trying every
permutation of characters, numbers etc.
The more different types of characters you have and the more you have, the
longer it will take for a program to deduce it

A little discrete math
A password using only lowercase letters 6 letters long has 26*26*26*26*26*26
permutations 308,915,776
A password using lower and uppercase letters 6 letters long has
52*52*52*52*52*52 permutations 19,770,609,664
A password using lower and uppercase letters and 12 symbols 6 characters
long has 64*64*64*64*64*64 permutations 68,719,476,736

So using upper and lower and symbols and lots of them really protects
against this method of breaking into accounts cause it takes a heck of lot
longer to go through the combinations.

Every time somebody accesses your website the IP address of the computer
accessing it is logged and Yahoo should be able to figure out where the
attack came from and depending on the store software and database engine
logging exactly how the data was stolen.

If you had total control of the code for the store then you could implement
some custom code for encrypting all the data in the database so it could not
be compromised so easily.

Cheers,
Richard MacKinnon.

Re: [Alpacasite] Breaking news from 2036

Hmmmm.....appears that our fearless leader has not had enough krispy-kremes and his sugar is too low, leading to some sort of brain-fade. We need to look to our medical doctors on the site and seek advice on how to give Mars bars from Mars injections. If we don't help the guy soon, he'll be out on the corner trying to sell his milking machines again, or worse yet, those bras :)

Hi all,
Just for grins, I thought I'd pass on some breaking news.
I modified my universal translator and with a simple reversal on the
polarity on the pharphegnugen, turned it into a time machine and went into
the future.
Here's the news from 2036:
ARI President Sarah Stepp has announced she will not be running for a 3rd
term. With her schedule as Senate majority leader and upcoming bid for
President of the US, she just doesn't have the time needed.
Amy McCroskie has decided to bribe Arlin. She'll be running for president
again. This would be her 12th term on a BOD. Arlin could not be reached for
comment, but he was heard swearing in the background.
Sarah's husband, AOBA president Quint Forstner-Stepp, will continue to serve
as AOBA president as he feels that the breed standards issue will soon be
resolved. He does intend to step down when he moves to the White House
though.
In a surprise move, it has been reported that Bill Gates recently acquired
Barnum and Bailey, two alpacas. While the reports do not state a purchase
price, it was confirmed that the title to the State of Hawaii had recently
been transferred from Mr. Gates to the sellers.
While Jerry Forstner was on vacation to Mars, Libby called him asking for
Mars bars. Jerry just didn't have the heart to explain, stopped by the local
7-11 on the way home, and picked the up the chocolate bars for her. He has
reported that he will vacation on Venus from now on.
Libby ate the Mars bars.
PacaStuff has reported it now has retail outlets in all of the major US and
European markets. It recently announced that it will be selling franchises,
the first two to be available in Eloy, Arizona and Talequah Oklahoma.
It has shipped approximately $10,000,000,000 in finished goods to Peru.
The alpaca export to Peru, Bolivia, and Chili has been going as planned,
although all three countries are complaining that we aren't sending enough
to meet demand. China is finally happy with our exportation quotas.
Rick Horn Jr. from California reported he has had no males born on his farm
in 3 years and 1892 births.
He credits this to only breeding on a waning moon, ACV in the water,
Montovanni records played during breedings, and a super-duper ultrasound
technique.
With dylithium crystals at an all time high, it's currently costing about
$86.00 to beam an alpaca to another farm for breeding. AI is being
investigated as an alternative, but it will require a vote from the
membership. Based on current numbers, we'll need 600,562,139 members to vote
in order to meet the quorum.

[Alpacasite] Re: $205,000 Female

Hi Sonda,

I too am a small farm, and a newbie. Personally, I don't think
prices are good or bad for small breeders. Totally agree with the
horse industry analogy. In my breed, where a good breeding animal
will for 10K - 50K, I remember being shocked when one of the
stallions went for 1.5 M. Exciting for sure, and gave us something
to talk about for years, but really nothing to me as a "pet" owner.

I'm not sure I agree with these record sales indicating that the
industry is stong. More like, as someone already mentioned, the
American Way. But I don't think its a bad thing, and don't forsee a
crash in the market. There is too much discussion along the line of
what John M was sayng about the fiber market. If we keep in mind
that eventually it will become a fiber market, and don't try to sweep
those figures under the rug (even if they are debatable) - I think
the industry will be fine. There is discussion of what to do with
older animals, geldings and animals needing re-homing. They may not
all be pleasant, or civil, but at least we are talking about it.

As for this small farm, my goal is to breed (eventually) the next
Invincible, or Misty Maiden, or...

As Rick says, life IS good.

Re: [Alpacasite] bedliners

Hi,

We purchased a Cargo Van to use when we only had a Dam and cria or a couple
of animals to move. We had the entire floor "line-x" and it has been
wonderful. It provides great footing and can easily be power-washed.

Here is there website:
_http://www.line-x.com/_ (http://www.line-x.com/)

There are many brands of spray on liners. We had used Rhino liner before -
not our favorite. I have been thrilled with Line-X.

Warm Regards,

Hi all,
Just for grins, I thought I'd pass on some breaking news.
Sarah's husband, AOBA president Quint Forstner-Stepp, will continue to
serve
as AOBA president as he feels that the breed standards issue will soon be
While Jerry Forstner was on vacation to Mars, Libby called him asking for
Mars bars. Jerry just didn't have the heart to explain, stopped by the
local
AI is being
investigated as an alternative, but it will require a vote from the
membership. Based on current numbers, we'll need 600,562,139 members to
vote
in order to meet the quorum.

[Alpacasite] Sad Day for OH Great Day for KS

List,

I have heard UNCONFIRMED news that Ohio State University will be losing
Dr. Dave Anderson in the near future. As I understand it he is slated to
be leaving OSU for parts of Kansas.

As I say, this is unconfirmed but the news comes from a rather reliable
source.

As a fellow Buckeye I am saddened and we will miss him but I am glad for
those in Kansas. If it is true, you are getting a great scholar and a
great friend of lamas.

Considering that some of our alpacas are getting up into the 20-plus range

[Alpacasite] Re: ARI membership

If you have problems again with the screen staying the same when you
click on it, there is an easy solution. Someone on this site told me
when I was having trouble registering crias online. To bypass the
pop ups without changing a lot of settings--I'm not real computer
savvy--just hold down the Ctrl key and then click and it overrides
the pop up every time. Simple, and works like a charm.

So..............I did all the things you said, Joyce. And it STILL didn't work. But.................guess what!!?? My name is spelled DeSando. So, I had to type it in de sando.c

It worked!!! See what happens when you tell Microsoft to remember your ID? You forget it, and get all discombobulated.

Thanks all, for all the time you helped this helpless one get online to ARI. Dues paid. Free DNA card will be shipped.

Well, that depends upon who you have your DSL service from. I just
went through trying to figure this out on my PC where I have
Internet Explorer and Yahoo/SBC. If you go to Tools, Inernet
Options, and click on the Security Tab. Then Click on Trusted
Sites/Sites and type in the address of the site to be trusted and
click Add. Also, under Tools, select Popup Blocker and turn it off,
but that's not enough....On the Menu line for your DSL Service, run
your cursor across the tabs until you come to one that says Popup
Blocker, select Always Allow Popups...highlight the address that is
blocked and click Allow. if there are none, then you need to browse
to the site that gives you the popup and try again.

See how easy ;-)

Rick,

LOL!! I am rolling on the floor with laughter!

I just calculated what my age will be in the year 2,036 and it made
me laugh even louder. What a visual! Good Lord willing, I'll be
there! LOL!

Thanks for the giggle, Rick. You are warped but amazing!

Rick,

Thanks for the updates! But one piece of news you missed, it has been announced that a new specialty item will be arriving at the "hottest" boutique delis...a lovely new cheese called "cou brouillé" (fuzzy neck)

How they milk those darned alpacas, I will never know!

Hi all,
Just for grins, I thought I'd pass on some breaking news.
