Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Dogs? Coyotes? killed my only 3 females alpacas left

Obviously, before you get more alpacas, you want to make your fences
as secure as possible. We have a few gates that have low spots where
dogs might get under, too. And every now and then, we do see roaming
dogs. I'm going to take care of this today!

You can fill with 3/4 minus gravel to make it level under the gate,
and adding pavers under the gate would be even more secure. Or, pour
some concrete. That will prevent anyone from digging under the gate,
and concrete is so cheap, less than $5 for a 90 lb bag, I think.

Jen,

Thanks for the great advice. I had all of my alpaca in inner pastures with an outer pasture with llamas, a donkey and 2 horses. I also had a llama in with my girls, luckily she is okay. I always wanted to get at least 2 livestock dogs, but I have heard so many tell that is it extreamly hard to find working dogs. I don't have the finances to keep trying to find the right ones. If anyone out there have 2 working dogs available for a reasonable price, please let me know. We are working on our fences now. My land is hilly so it is hard to get the gates level at the bottoms. Any suggestions? I will have girls again. One way or the other. You all have given me so much encouragement, how could I not have the courage to try again? I will always miss my girls, 2 were born here on my farm and one of those was expecting her first cria next month. I will include a few pics of them in the photo section in their memory. I miss the kisses everyday now, I miss sitting in the barn with them after a hectic day. But I will get more girls and try again. If anyone has any available at a good price, please let me know. And again, I cannot say how much it means to me to have all of you as family.

Wendy:

So sorry to hear about your loss. I would be devastated... Your poor poor girls! Don't give up with the insurance company. They likely have a policy to say NO a number of times. I would just make it a policy of your own to call or write them EVERY DAY if necessary until they relent. That is what insurance is for. As a matter of fact, write them a letter telling them exactly what you want/ expect out of the situation.... Here's what happened, here's all the suporting documents, here's how much she was insured for, I will be expecting a check within 2 weeks....I am confident that you will handle this matter expeditiously and respectfully.....sincerely.....etc.etc. I believe very much in The Law of Attraction (basically energy follows thought OR you get more of what you focus on) in all aspects of my life. When it comes to matters such as these, focus on the outcome that you WANT. Give THAT outcome all of your attention, energy and focus and you will be amazed at how the energy will shift. The insurance company WILL pay. The deals out there are AMAZING and you will be able to get 2-3 more healthy females for the price of the ONE that was insured.

This being said, in terms of replacing your females (understanding that they were unique and loved and irreplaceable)..... focus on the outcome you want in this department as well. Ex. I want to find 3 healthy, high quality bred females for free of a very low price within the next 2 months... There are so many people in financial distress everywhere, you never know what kind of great deal you might get. People are getting great deals EVERY DAY in EVERY part of the country. I have seen situations where people couldn't care for their animals anymore and basically "gave" the whole herd to a friend of mine for 1/2 the profits... You might find someone willing to give half shares in an animal in exchange for YOU keeping the animals and taking care of them. Put the energy out there for what you want and see what comes back.

The forums and lists are a great place to post your wants, make sure you post on as many as you can, craigs list, local farmers bulletins, alpaca nation....do a google search for distress sales. Ask others to keep their ears open for you and forward you any leads. Advertise that you are willing to take care of animals in exchange for shares of cria etc... You never know who will be willing to help OR who needs help...

In the meantime - as was suggested, you need to figure out where the dogs got in and do something to prevent further attacks. LGD's are a good way to go. I love mine.

Best to you!

I am so sorry to hear of you loss. What a horrible thing to have to deal with. I just want to say to never let anyone make you feel that you are wrong for morning any loss. They may just be animals to some people but they are a part of our lives and it is only right that we should morn their passing. I cry over the loss of one of my beloved animals as much if not more than the loss a close friend or family member.
We started our herd with just 2 young males and in no time I came to love them very much. When one of them got sick less then a month later I cried for weeks. I still cry when I think about him and how gentle he was. Heck, I still cry over the loss of my Sam and it has been over a year since he was hit and killed by a car. I also cry when we sell an alpaca even though I know they are going to a good home. They are a part of my family and I miss them. So there is nothing wrong with shedding tears for something you care very much for.
We worry a great deal about something getting to the herd including coyotes, neighborhood dogs and now we heard that a cougar has been seen in the area. A little over a year ago we got a border collie/pyranees mix and a full blood pyranees as puppies. We put them in with the alpacas the day we brought them home. They are the best investment we could have ever made. They are now almost full grown and work as a team to protect the herd. One stays close to the alpacas and the other goes out to challenge what ever is causing the threat. They were never trained to do this, they do it by instinct. You might want to consider doing this if you choose to start again. And like others have urged, don't give up. Give yourselves time to morn and look into the many options out there.

I went out and ones throat was tore open, and the other two were chewed on the rear end. Was this dogs? Coyotes? I don't know what to do. The vet said it was probaly dogs, the cops said it was probaly coyotes. These animals were a huge part of my life. They were not only my only hope of retirement, they were a huge part of my heart. I loved these animals so much. I am so heartbroken I can barely stop crying. I had llamas in with them and in surronding pastures. I still owe money on these animals and I don't have anything left now of my dream except for my 2 males. I am sorry to keep going on. We are self employed and my husband said there was no way to replace them. My dream is gone because of some dogs or coyotes. Thank everyone for any info in advance and for listening. God Bless.

Just Thank you for being their. When I told some people today what
happened, they looked at me like I was crazy for crying over an animal. It
helps alot to know I can come here and talk to other people that
understand. Thank you so much.

Oh good lord. If your insurance was through Prairie States or
Wilkins, I imagine that unless you had a "named peril" policy, that
this ought to be covered.

Please don't give up. I remember hearing about some people who lost
their entire herd to roaming neighborhood dogs a few years ago. It
took a while to recover emotionally, but they have alpacas again.

I wish there was something I could say...

[AlpacaTalk] Dog Trouble

I have had trouble with dogs in the past. Yes most were escaped or abandoned pets. I could not be everywhere so I enlisted the help of some of my neighbors. Anytime we saw loose dogs we called animal control. I have'nt had anymore trouble. It is also a deterant if you have dogs as they are territorial.

I am so sorry this happened to you but if you contact animal control in your area they may have had other calls close to you and you can work with them to catch the animals. I know it sounds terrible but you must protect your other animals so load your gun. I assume any dog on my property that is uninvited and has no collar or tag is wild and potentially diseased or rabid. If the dogs were important to the owners they would not be on your place. Unfortunately they and you suffer because of less than sterling dog owners. Keep your chin up and go after the source of your trouble. Good Luck!
