I have seen grey pinto huacayas. It can happen!

Hi Susan

 

Tricky question. I personally have been lucky enough to pull grey out of the breedings in which I have tried to accomplish grey, some still in the making of a result. We got a grey when we bred our DSG/DRG to our MSG female. She popped a very impressive grey but that was to be some what expected. Then I decided to breed our black who has produced grey to our Maroon who has only knowingly produced one LRG. They also produced an extremely impressive Grey. (Both on Openherd - Cedar Grove's Silver Phaeton and Cedar Grove's Takhoma Silverhawk... still working on the pages. :-))  IMO for what it may be worth to some, I have found that when you breed a brown, normally med to dark in color who has silver in the background, to a black or brown who has grey in the background within 3 generations, chances are you can pop one. If your male is high in grey genetics, or obviousy a grey himself, and your female is a dark or brown with grey in her background, I have seen it works multiple times. We had a farm breed two of their females to two of our males this season for next season's babies. I am hoping that we accomplished a couple grey babies for their farm this year. Fingers crossed!!

I was wondering if there are any rules or hints you have as to how to get a gray?   For example - I have a burgundy tuxedo - should I breed her to a silver gray, rose gray or dark silver gray?  What type of gray should I breed to a black female to increase the chance of getting gray?
