Re: [AlpacaTalk] Need advice ....

Have you thought of using hot wire? We installed hot wire ourselves very
inexpensively. We put one strand 4"-5" inches from the bottom of the fence and
one strand angled out 4" from the top of the fence. Our coyotes have not
only not bothered the alpacas, they have left the area after being shocked and
don't even come on our property anymore.

more trouble with raccoons than anything else. They ate our goldfish
in the pond, and many many of our poor hens! Ooooooo if they weren't
so adorable!

I don't know of any "normal" livestock fencing that would keep out a
determined bear. We use 5' no-climb horse fence. 6' would be better,
in a more wild area. Livestock guard dogs will keep predators at bay.
And bears are omnivores, so they're likely to look for easier food
than going through multiple LGDs.

We do have coyotes very close. Even with some of our maybe less than
perfect gates, we haven't had any incidents of coyote attack, either.

Many people put barbed wire on the top and bottom of the exterior of
their fencelines. Not a bad idea. I think barbed wire and LGDs would
probably keep any bears and coyotes away. And raccoons. Just be sure
to have tall enough fences and good gates that go down to the ground.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Need advice ....

Hi Carla:
2 dogs. Maremma were bred in the Alps to defend flocks against black bear & wolves.
They work as a team.
Do at least a 5' fence and maybe even an outside perimeter with a high & low electric
strip.
We have a beautiful female and a nine month old male(he's pushing 160 lbs) He's going to be a brute.
When raised with livestock Maremmas, if pressed, will defend them to the death.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Sales out of area

If they're in my neighborhood, you can send 'em my way! *wink wink*
We've got a whole farm full of excellent alpacas generally for sale!
Other than what you mentioned, full med hx and fiber samples. With a
recent sale, I included fleece samples of the animals(s) in question,
parents, siblings, service sires, offspring of potential service
sires... And I did lots of research about relatives and show placings
to add to my animals' perceived value and incredible bargain prices!

Oh, also, lots and lots of photos. Bite shots, conformation - both
sides, front and back, toes, teeth, genitals, teats, head shots...
Perhaps a video of walking with the animal so your customer can see
the gait.

Obviously make registrations available. I send scanned copies to
customers for review.

[AlpacaTalk] Sales out of area

I was recently contacted by another farm, well out of my area, inquiring about one of my
alpacas for sale. While I have sold a couple to other farms that came to my farm to visit and
could lay hands on the animals, I am not sure how is the best way to present my alpaca "long
distance". I have pictures, lineage, fiber analysis report, and medical reports if needed.
Any other suggestions so I can present to this potential buyer? Thanks.

[AlpacaTalk] wanted: source for bamboo fiber

I wonder if anyone might know, and be willing to share, a source for
bamboo "silk" fiber. I'm looking for fiber to blend with my alpaca,
and to sell in an online store unblended, as well. Also any other
"peace" fibers. I love silk, who doesn't, but really have a problem
with how it's produced. Even Tussah silk is produced the same way as
mulberry silk, it just comes from a different species! I had found
some sources online but apparently forgot to bookmark them!

Of course, I'm looking for the lowest prices I can find, since I'll
be reselling.

Thanks in advance for any info!

[AlpacaTalk] RE: Goldenseal

<<<<"hi Janice - thanks for the golden seal information - i bought mine from
Richters in Ontario - it says "Super Strength Goldensea; Root" and then
Racine de Hydraste and Hydrastis Canadensis (i don't know what either
means) "
>>>>

Pia & Wendy - what I notice about the label info you have sent is that
this product is root only. Our research has shown that adding the leaf
potentiates the root making it considerably more potent; but the root is
potent in and of itself, so hopefully this brand will give you the
results I get from Sleepy Hollow's.

I have written to Randy Beavers/Sleepy Hollow asking him if this brand
is one that was tested by any chance. I don't recognize it so probably
not. But I will let you know what he says. And also asked him about
shipping across the border.

Warmly, Janice
also glad to see so many natural minded folks on this list, with the
botanicals and the homeopathy, etc!

<<<<and yes i followed all the directions for planting the goldenseal -
four years til harvest is ok as it usually takes me that long to get
around to something. I plant as much natural medicine on my farm as
possible, for my family and my animals.>>>>

LOL! Me too Wendy! so glad I am not the only one that seems to watch
months fly by in the blink of an eye and still trying to get to whatever
I thought I was going to get to last year.....and omg is it spring again
already!

What other types of natural medicine do you plant on your farm? I got
some wormwood planted 2 yrs ago but because of our severe drought it has
just sat there not doing much, but at least not dying. I am looking for
a comfrey root but am not having any luck. I used to grow comfrey years
ago, but went off and left it at my last place.

Warmly, Janice
