[Alpacasite] Re: Llama in car...

Oh, I totally agree. Most of my 11 llamas are classic
light wool. I am into using fiber now, and that's why
I keep two gelded alpacas as well. The boy llamas
(and one of the adult girls) are packers and one pulls
a cart also. My herd is very diverse!

A side note: like in the photo, my best breeding
female has tipped ears (the tips went soft when she
was 3 years old). I first saw this girl as a weanling
about ten years ago and really wanted her. At that
time, her asking price was $7000, far beyond my means.
She showed well and threw great babies for her owner.
Then her owner decided to get out of llamas and
"gave" her to me for $300. Those high prices didn't
hold forever in the llama industry--a cautionary note
for those of you who consider your alpacas
"investments."

light wooled, guanaco-appearing, regal animals with

we are supposed to think the "new type" are somehow
better than these
oldies. Is the loss of these classics perhaps one of
the reasons why the
interest in llamas has dramatically decreased?? I
STILL prefer the "old

[Alpacasite] Re: New poll for Alpacasite

I disagree with the characterization of Ken's posting
as a "political" message. What the individuals in
question did was fraud and harmed both the llama and
alpaca communities. Now this group has launched
"Collectible Llamas" - an organization with its own
registry to promote suri "llamas." Magnifire, the
llama-alpaca cross that sparked the sanctions, is
described as a llama in the ads for this organization,
repeating the lie. If you hear it often enough, are
you going to believe it?

So what is the benefit of a group of breeders churning
out cross-bred animals to satisfy the demand for the
latest fad suri llamas? What happens to the animals
that aren't born with the desirable fiber (are they
buried in the back pasture or are they dumped on the
market)? How does this impact your marketing and
sales of your purebred animals, alpacas or llamas?

Explain to me how this is "politics" and not a viable
concern to reputable breeders.

[Alpacasite] Ken's posting

Why is it that there are a few folks on this site that raise
objections to Ken's posting? I would much rather read what Ken has to
say than read 100+ messages about the size of hay bales in different
parts of the US! What difference does it make if I can buy hay for
$3.00-$4.00 in NY? I live in Colorado where I pay about $7.50 for a
bale of hay- I am not going to order a load from NY or California or
anyplace else I am going to get my hay local!
Ken has some great information about alpacas and their care as do
alot of other people. I have always believed that things should not
be color coated. There are not so honest people in all walks of
life, if we can not share that information on this site with other
alpaca on this site we have a problem. I would much rather know the
history of those that are becoming judges than the price of hay in
NY.! Lona, you seem to know "something" about another judge-but
rather than take the heat yourself for presenting the facts you want
to pass it off on someone else so you can remain "safe".
Neil, while I have read all of your postings and gained alot of
useful information from them, Ken has the right to do his postings.
No one has to answer them or feel the need to respond to them. That
is why there is a delete button on the key board!
I do not know Ken personally, but I enjoy his information and take it
for what it is worth- INFORMATION not gospel! We all still need to do
our own research. Ken just has alot more of the research available
that he is willing to share!

Re: [Alpacasite] Question about hay

The stems may not be what they prefer, but both my llamas, and my goats
must eat them. If they don't, they will get less at the next feeding. I
feed them enough to keep them in condition, but not so much that they
waste it. It is just too costly to rake up along with the manure. The
only critters that have the luxury of stem build up are a couple of
older, timid does that came up thin at shearing. Didn't take those dears
but a couple of days in their own pen, with excess feed to fall into the
princess role.

Re: [Alpacasite] Re: need good hay in California

We, and our friends often use "hay" as a tongue in cheek salutation too.
Why be so serious? We have a lot more fun this way. When I need to have
my resupply hay cart filled up I call out to my husband "HAY!" He often
pronounces "HAY!" upon delivery of said cart, and my neighbor
occasionally calls out "Hay" when he sees me out feeding.

[Alpacasite] Re: Senior Judges & Llamas

John,

Actually, no. Nobody sees the attendee list in advance other than
those I stated. And I don't mean for this to sound uncaring or
calloused to the attendees, but I simply cannot imagine that anyone
outside of the committee members really cares who is on the list in
advance. Volunteer animals have to be rounded up, barn has to be set
up, tests have to be implemented... clinics are a well orchestrated,
Level I Show of sorts and there are far too many details and far too
much work to be done to worry about who is showing up to certify or
recertify.

The clinic began Friday morning and it's now Sunday night. The clinic
is completed. All of the attendees have completed their
requirements, taken their tests and they are probably all back home
at this hour.

There were a lot of attendees as well as a large group of volunteers
at the clinic....just like always. I would venture to say the
attendee list is pretty public at this point for anyone that was
actually there.

I have no idea where people get their information either, but it
would probably be better to ask them, one on one, rather than to
speculate on various versions of truth and implications of wrong
doing.

Re: [Alpacasite] Re: need good hay in California

Hi Chris,

I looked it up on Google, but I have no idea who Jonathan Kellerman
is or how he writes. It shouldn't surprise you, knowing me, that I
have been reading "heavy literature" since childhood. It entertains
me. Go figure. :)

Since it is now totally off the topic of "good hey in
Califor-neigh-ey", I will, sadly, end this string. We can take it up
over shearing---only 5 months to our favorite days of the year.

Warm regards, as always,

Well Amy, it appears that someone besides those that you listed sees
the list of attendees, else Ken would not know who was going to be
attending.

Dark and sinister? Who knows? Hard to make sense of a lot of what
has happened of late. With only a few facts I suppose each of us is
free to make up our own version of Truth.

[Alpacasite] Re: Senior Judges & Llamas

Hi John,

I am not sure where you are, or were, going with this comment, but
before it goes somewhere dark and sinister, please allow me to point
out to you, and everyone else, that no one sees the list of attendees
outside of the JTCC Committee Members, our Show Division
Administrator and myself because I am the board liaison to the entire
Show Division.

Board members do not see the list of attendees because it does not
require board approval. Attendees sign up with the office, pay their
registration fees and show up for the clinic.

What kind of indiscretion are you implying from which direction?

Hey, I know you two are being silly and having fun with my suggestion, but I was serious. Ken has computer file archives that must rival a mega-business. Would be great to go to his website and look up the information and then be able to ask him about it on alpacasite.

And then to not have to read repeats would be a nice time saver on the political side of it.

RE: [Alpacasite] New poll for Alpacasite

One of the great joys of democracy is the right to choose NOT to participate
[with tongue firmly planted in cheek]. 2488 Alpacasite members. 91 responses
[3.65%].

The issue notwithstanding, since Rick was inclined to offer an opportunity
to share opinions about it, it would behoove folks to at least participate.
The concept of majority rule in its purest form only applies when EVERYONE
participates. When a small group chooses to participate, that becomes the
source for the majority to rule. Right now slightly more than 2% of the
membership are about to determine the outcome of Rick's request for
participation. Pretty dismal. But not a surprise.

Let it fly.

[Alpacasite] Re: judges clinic

I don't think anything needs to be hidden from newer people. If one
was so inclined to look for something to bring up from the past that
would be controversial, it could be found. I find it interesting
information, but there was such a negative spin on how it was
presented that people immediately got defensive. The useful
information gets completely lost in the bickering.

I'm glad there were consequences for their actions, but it seems that
they "did their time" and have hopefully learned from it. Perhaps
getting recertified is a positive thing and they are moving forward.
Seems like a good thing.

[Alpacasite] judges clinic

Libby and Jan,

the info that Mary and Anthony are attending a judge's recertification clinic is important for what reason? If they have met the requirements of the sanctions for that incident AND they are known to be very good judges, what is this about? People make mistakes, generally pay for them somehow and move forward. Frankly I have never heard anything but good things about their judging. Getting re-certified is a " positive" step, not a negative one. This would be a 'fact' of note if they were the ONLY attendees as a personal favor; but otherwise I think it falls more in the cry wolf, or the sky is falling message. Just my personal take on it. Re-certification is a definite positive.

I have a suggestion though that might help. For those that like to hear the re-hash over and over or those new and don't have a clue what this is all about..Ken could establish a website for information that he can list on his signature line. That way we can access his volumes of herd management, fiber information which I highly value; as well as his litany of mis-deeds past and present committed by alpaca folks, along with the intense condemnations be they right or wrong.

This would save so much time for everyone and keep things civil when it is of a political nature since he doesn't want to join alpacapolitics to do this rehash of misdeeds or disagreements.

And Tim, just read your post. Afraid for the information to be known by new people? I would have to say a polite nuts to that thought! Just prefer positives, moving forward, and balance. Moving a nasty discussion to politics site is not curtailing information. It isn't moved unless it is a dead horse being dug up again or gets very personally nasty.

Hi Jan,

"Traipse" is correct; I caught that one too. I often see
misspellings, but Rick has put us on notice that he will not tolerate
folks correcting misspellings. Since I prefer to remain on
Alpacasite, that is one battle I will chose not to fight. From time
to time, I misspell words, too. Coincidentally, I am reading a
fascinating book called "The Language Instinct", by Stephen
Pinker. It deals with the genetics of language.
