RE: [AlpacaTalk] Blowing Fleece

While they are standing.  We usually stand them next to a panel so they can’t go full circle trying to avoid the blower.  After they realize it isn’t going to eat them, they usually settle.  It helps if two are doing it.  We try to have a somewhat of an assembly line going, so while one is being sheared, another is being blown.  We are going to attempt to weigh everyone the day before so I can have all dosages of wormers and vaccinations ready for each animal and that will be one less thing to do.

It really did make a difference with the shears………few cutter and comb changes!  It also didn’t get hot as quickly.  I am sure the dirt and vm really take their toll on the shears.

Do you blow them before shearing when they are already down or do you do it when they are standing up?  Don't they freak out?   I think I want to try that this year - the vacuuming worked halfway but not near well enough to risk ruining my brand-new vacuum!

I use a gas powered leaf blower and it works great.   They all seem to like it.  I had absolutely no problems.  I used it before the got to the shearer.  FYI the shearer said it really saved on his blades.

Susan, we do it while they're standing. I would get a shop vac with a long hose, so you can keep the noisy vac a bit away from them.

It helps to start before the shearer is ready, so that you can give everyone a chance to get used to the noise and movement.

Even our spitty girl tolerated it last year.

Cheers,
