Re: [AlpacaTalk] no posts?

I understand Heather.
We do have owners that are providing a $20 raffle for a breeding to a choice of
4 males.
That's what I thought the alpaca community would be interested in.
Anyone is welcome to contact me for details.

I think this post has done that. :) If anyone wishes to donate or
contact Gary, please do so off-list.

I really prefer that this group remain mostly free of any advertising.
I personally don't mind Ellie Winslow's posts, or those for alpaca
pre-natal seminars, etc., because they are a benefit to all alpaca
breeders (even though there is a profit to those holding the seminars
or what have you). I don't mind a certain amount of announcements for
shows, as that is an equal opportunity event.

While your post is certainly not profit driven, it only very obliquely
touches on the alpaca community, and in that respect, I don't feel it's
appropriate to promote it here any further. However, the postings about
the beheaded cria and asking for donations for the reward fund does
absolutely affect the alpaca community. It may be a fine line, but to
me it's fairly clear.

My apologies to everyone I've offended.

Best regards,
Heather

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Update on Eye Injury

Congratulations on Allie's eye!

I'm sorry but that vet sounds like a complete jerk! There are many vets
who do keep only office hours, but we are fortunate to have two large
animal vets literally within minutes of us who are available at all
hours, 24/7.

[AlpacaTalk] Update on Eye Injury

<<Yup. I've been noticing how quiet this group has been. Maybe I ought

> go to the group website and make sure nothing weird happened. I've
> heard Yahoo is notorious for glitches.
>

Maybe everyone is having the kind of week I've been having! I know I
haven't been able to get to my email all week. But I wanted to let you
all know where we are with the eye injury and the vet.

She (the vet) was totally non responsive to my voice messages as well as
to the note (with homebaked organic bread and an apology for calling her
so late at night with the face swelling - I did this at the suggestion
of one of the list members here and I thought it was a good idea - tho
what I really wanted to do was totally write her off I was so mad). In
the note I asked her to let me know when would be a good time for her to
come by and look at Allie's eye (just as I had several times in voice
messages over the previous week); that I thought it looked quite good
and wanted to drop back on the frequency of the drops; and also that I
needed her to check our old horse's teeth to see if they needed to be
floated. No response. The whole week went by. I was of the opinion of
one who wrote here that I should find another vet. The problem being I
have done without a vet for the past 2 yrs (and buried quite a few
alpacas) because there simply is no one around here willing or able to
work with the alpacas.

Last Friday I noticed some bleeding from the eye that had been looking
so good all week. By Saturday it was worse. I called the vet and told
her what was going on and asked her if she could come by and look at it.
After some lecturing on her part, she agreed to come by on her way
into town to pick up some stuff, but informed me that "people think just
because I work from home they can call me any time of the day or night,
but I keep regular hours just like any vet....M-F 9-5" (that info is not
on her outgoing voice message)as well as let me know that she is booked
for appts (as far as the horse's teeth) about 2 wks out, and in fact is
not really taking any new clients. Ohhh Kaaaay. No mention whatsoever
of the bread or note.

So she came by. And was very pleasant. She was amazed at how good the
eye looked! She said it was the worst eye injury she had ever seen and
had no hope whatsoever that we would save the eyeball; she was just
humoring me by letting me treat it for 6-8 wks to see if by any chance
we could avoid the surgery. the bleeding was from the torn third eyelid
that we didn't know about; the tissue had died and was kind of hanging
down and bleeding a bit. She snipped it off and said I could stop
treating the eye.....declared it totally healed! She gave me some
ointment tho and said to use that in the eye 2x day for the next week,
just to be on the safe side from the tissue she had just snipped out.

She just keep commenting on how she couldn't believe how nicely the eye
had healed up and said that it was possible Allie could regain a bit of
eyesight, at least enough to know if a predator was coming at her. So
far I don't see any evidence of sight :-(.

Goldenseal to the rescue once again. Of course, since I was also using
the prescription eyedrops I can't say for certain that the GS is what
caused the eye to heal up so nicely. But 3 weeks into our prescribed
6-8 wks treatment, the eye was healed.

Also, Allie was SO good with the vet, very patient and easy to work with
(!). She kept saying she couldn't believe what a good patient she was.
Way to go Allie. Hopefully she won the vet over and she will be
willing to come again, should/when I have another emergency.

Hope everyone is getting their hay stocked up. That is what I have been
doing all week, preparing space for the winter hay delivery coming as
soon as the rain stops.....we've had a much needed 5 inches this week,
but what a mess.

Warmly, Janice in GA
