What brand of shears do you recommend for someone just learning to shear? My son is willing to learn how to shear my suris. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Dar

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Shearing Cria

I sheared my herd with clippers, last year.  The clippers that I used were Double K Groomers Edge Power Clippers.  The power pack can be mounted on your belt of you can just set it down. The clippers are so light weight and quiet.  I also bought the Andis Super Ag for when I need to have a cordless clipper.  We didn't have any problems.

Laura,

I didn't have a Great Pyr, but had a Newfoundland (with the same kind of coat).  I agree with your groomer.  That is what I did with my dog.  The clippers that I used were the Wahl Professionals.

We tried to shear a cria one year with that type of clipper, and we really didn't have good luck with it. But, maybe those who do find that they work for cria shearing are more skilled than I am!

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Shearing Cria and question regarding LGD PYRS

I remember it taking quite awhile to do.  It was slow going, but it did the job.  The new clippers have removable blades so I am hoping to be able to switch to freshly sharpened blades if they get too slow.  It is all an experiment!

I don't remember the model but they were just Wahl animal clippers.  I have recently ordered a better set, but they are not expensive.  I hope they will be powerful enough to trim my Pyrs's bellies!  <image001.jpg>http://www.horse.com/Search.aspx?query=Andis+Animal+Clipper

Our shears are Premiere 4000S and I am still intimidated by them for a dog or cria.  Maybe this year I'll be more confident!

Anyone out there with Great Pyrenees………question:  In the past, I have used a rake to remove excess undercoat on the dogs when they start blowing their undercoats.  I also trim the pants and shave the bellies nice and clean……….my question is how many of you actually shear them down to the skin or close to it?  It seems to me that getting their thick undercoat off them is more important then removing the lengthy guard hairs but I have seen it done.  I noticed the dogs still have that thick undercoat, it is just shorter.  I have spoken to professional groomers who say don't shear them……….just get the undercoat out and shave their bellies so they can cool off.

Opinions?
