RE: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Allison

Thanks Janice,

What a day!---advice noted and appreciated.  I will get some of those probiotics---soon;

She does need something…her appetite is not what it was before this episode.  Oh well…life is a fatal disease—which means we just have to put as much quality into the space between birth and death as possible!

<<< HI Janice,

Yes, I was horrified when she suddenly started attacking staff and cussing
and being oppositional.
she also tried to spear another resident with a fork.

In mid stream of this other stuff we had to stop and get her over to a
doctor; it is a 28 mile drive each way and she was not wanting to cooperate.

It turns out that she had a Urinary Tract Infection---and like many
wheelchair bound elders---could not feel it as we might, so did not know it
was occurring.>>>

As I was reading I was already thinking med reaction or some such
thing. People don't just become like this for no good reason. thank
goodness a doc was able to dx and treat. But watch out for antibiotic
reactions. They will cause an imbalance in her intestinal flora which
can have far reaching affects - mental, emotional, and physical. I am
sure they are giving her antibiotics. Made sure she gets some good
high quality probiotics to reestablish the gut flora or she will get
really out of whack and start a downhill slide. The doc will say just
to eat some yogurt....that won't be good enough. She will need some
*really* high quality probiotics.....most on the market are worthless.
Natren's Healthy Trinity is the only one I know for a fact has the live
probiotics in it that it is supposed to have. Pricey, but worth it as
you actually get what you pay for. They make it in a powder form which
is cheaper and may be easier for her to take than swallowing the capsules.

All these changes are really hard on anyone and especially on the
elderly as they struggle with losing independence and their entire sense
of who they are. It is really really hard for them. Change is hard
for all of us, but most especially the elderly. My heart goes out to
her.....and you.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] Recent AOBA activities

I do not think that AOBA should, or can, try to be the lead for all parts of the alpaca industry.  The show system does not reflect the needs of the fiber users.  Look at the wool industry, this elementary tie is made.  The top "stud" is the best and given blue ribbons because he gives traits that are desired by the product user.

If AOBA is to lead a show system so out of touch with any other part of the alpaca industry, then perhaps they should stick to shows and quit pretending to provide leadership in any other venue.  However, I do not want to be the one to try and make another "AOBA" for what is becoming the larger part of our industry, our fiber.

There are options to AOBA certified shows. Of course, there's always ALSA, but then we have the International thing, which I have very little knowledge of, except the IAO which is always a great success as far as I know, and draws the best of the best in the country.

I think things are much worse.  I think we should start having non-AOBA-affiliated shows.

HI Janice,

Yes, I was horrified when she suddenly started attacking staff and cussing and being oppositional…she also tried to spear another resident with a fork.

In mid stream of this other stuff we had to stop and get her over to a doctor; it is a 28 mile drive each way and she was not wanting to cooperate.

It turns out that she had a Urinary Tract  Infection---and like many wheelchair bound elders---could not feel it as we might, so did not know it was occurring.

Doctor says that is all too common.  But, with proper treatment, she is becoming more herself and far less confused by later this past week.

I will be over there Tuesday as her furniture is finally being delivered by the moving company; we have had to borrow some from the facility where she is now living while hers was in transit.  All that is difficult for folks in this age group…as you probably know all too well.

IN any case, you are so right---stress load around what is supposed to be our happy alpaca farm has been major!

It will be nice to return to private life…Thanks so much for you kind thoughts.

Allison
