I live in Maryland, which over all is moderate in summer and winter,
although we do get some very hot and humid days where the heat index is over
100 degrees. We shear the whole body of our alpacas, but do leave fiber on
their legs, top knots, and tails. We prefer the look of the fiber on the
legs and I think it does keep the flies from biting them on the legs
somewhat. They do get regular belly hosing, have fans and a port-a-cool in
the barn. We pick up manure twice a day and keep the inside barn floors
power washed about 3 times a week. The inside stalls have the automatic fly
sprayers and we use Stall Dry on the outside poop piles which has DE as an
active ingredient. This is what has worked for us. Our fly population does
exist, but it is minimal and the alpacas have never suffered from heat
stress.
