Hi Teresa, I had a bunch of yarn made but I haven't made anything yet ,I
love to just look at it and love the feel and smell of it.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] bought some yarn

Isn't this learning amazing??? I learned to spin and am now trying to knit.  Can you imagine the days when this is how they got new clothes??  By the time you shear, skirt, card, spin, ply, knit and assemble-it would be at least 2 years before you would get a new sweater!!  Amazing how far we have come...and how spoiled we are...to be able to do all of this for the pleasure of it and not out of necessity.  So-o-o Cool!

I don't knit or crochet, but I have started spinning, and I love my
alpaca yarn! I learned on alpaca because I just couldn't stand the
way the wool felt!

I'm also carding up a bunch of beige fleece to felt a jacket. I'm
still in the carding stage, I can't wait to move to the garment
making phase!

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Shearing Pregnant Female

We did that once. Out here, it's very hard to get a shearer to come
back for one animal! So we hand sheared with fiskars spring loaded
scissors. Poor girl looked awful.

Now, we shear no matter when they're due. 5 days is not a problem at
all, what I understand is that one month or so before due date is
more worrisome, because if the stress causes labor, you have a
preemie. But, we shear everyone, anyway, and have never had problems
from it. 5 days before due date is probably going to be just fine.
Just make sure they know she's pregnant, and not to roll her over her
back. They'll be careful.

[AlpacaTalk] Shearing Pregnant Female

I have set up my shearing appointment and have some concerns about one of my pregnant females. Based on the ultrasound, she would be due about 5 days after I have the shearing scheduled.

Is this a problem? Would it be better to hold off on shearing her until after she has had her cria?

I want to make sure mom doesn't have any issues that could have been prevented.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Mineral

Quality Llama Products also carries it, as does Useful Items. You can
order Stillwater minerals directly from Stillwater, and they ship free.

I'd recommend getting only what you'll use in a few months (or the
smallest amount) because the Vitamins do degrade over time. The
minerals being minerals do not. :)

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Mineral

We have always used Stillwater 104, but I like the Golden Blend and
Evans Blend E formulations a lot.

If you are in a low selenium area, it is extremely important to use a
mineral mix that has a high amount of this trace mineral. Alpacas
need more than other ruminants, without it and sufficient Vitamin E,
they can die of White Muscle Disease, have decreased fertility in
both males and females, and all sorts of other major problems.
Vitamin E deficiency can cause muscle necrosis including heart tissue
which isn't reparable once adequate levels are restored.

[AlpacaTalk] Re: Mineral

Hi Nan,

Welcome to the alpaca business. I am new to alpaca also. The farm where I bought my alpaca recommends the free choice minerals by Dr. Norm Evans. It is a blend that contains vitamin E and selenium. It seems to be the most popular with the alpaca community.

Here is the website www.lamawellness.zoovy.com

That is how I get mine.
