Re: [AlpacaTalk] Just Checking In

Wendy, You sound better.  Let the insurance stuff work itself through.  I remember it took a bit of time and some followup paperwork.

I noticed our apple trees are in full bloom...that means it's mushroom weather.  I love morels.  I wish my dad was still around.  I swear he could smell them but he proably just knew where the good spots were!

Talk to ya later, Kathy

Thank you for your thoughts Kathy. I really appreciate all of the support I
have been getting. I have been looking for LGD's and female alpacas and
hoping that my insurance will pay. I am so glad that it is warming up too. I
love spring and I was really looking forward to my cria next month. Things
will get better, I just have to trust in God.

Thank you,

Wendy

[AlpacaTalk] RE: LGD

<<<Of course, the other alternative you have if you want an lgd is to
pen up your birds so the dogs can't get to them....and that may be a way
to introduce birds if you get a dog. the dog needs time to bond and to
begin to understand they aren't a threat. Having the birds caged where
the dog can see them and you taking care of them helps them know they
aren't the enemy.

good luck! Let us know what you decide!
Susan>>>

Thanks Susan, I have a lead on what sounds like a really good mature Pyr
that needs a home so I am thinking thru all these issues. I have
already thought about keeping the birds caged up for a bit, but hate to
do that as their pens are tiny; and also because the ducks are there for
snail control and the guineas are there for tick control. Also I think
I may have already mentioned I have 3 miniature ducks coming here to
live soon and they would definitely be vulnerable.

It feels like a huge decision; I want all my critters to be happy and
safe. Having the birds caged definitely works. When I was still in
Atlanta I had 3 chickens in my back yard along with my 2 german
shepards. The chickens stayed in a pen until one day a friend convinced
me to let them out and he promised to snatch the (large strong) dogs if
one went after a chicken. With breathe held I opened the chickens pen.
Those german shepards - a breed know to be a chicken killer - did not
pay one iota of attention to those chickens. They all lived together
peacefully in that rather small backyard for many many years. I'd see
the chickens walking on top of the dogs as they lay on the deck and they
never paid them a bit of attention.

Currently the guineas are flying out of the pen and wandering the same
area where the dog is; the dog will chase a kong that lands right next
to a guinea and never even look at it. And german shepards have a very
strong prey drive. So I am guess I am surprised to hear about the Pyrs
killing the guineas. I would be horrified to have something like that
happen. I am hoping and working towards being able to fence in more
pasture and fence in more area in general in anticipation of getting
goats and letting everyone have more roaming around and grazing area.
It would be much better for the Pyr to have more area? I have been told
that they roam over/cover a very large distance and hard to keep
contained? Yet that seems contrary to what I read here about them
patrolling the pasture fences. Do I need to worry about them getting
out of the not very secure fences? I do have my german shepard that
will not be happy about having another dog around, but he is obviously
not in the pasture with the livestock as the Pyr will be. But I know he
will run fences with the Pyr as he does it with the horses - and they
all get a good exercise work out :-).

Just a lot of things to consider.

Thanks for the all the input.
Wendy - how you are doing up there in TN? If I end up not taking this
grown, trained Pyr, maybe you would be interested? Let us know how you
are doing.

Warmly, Janice

[AlpacaTalk] Just Checking In

Wendy,  Was just thinking of you.

It's been really warm here the last few days but I think we may get some rain today.  The grass is growing (as is the weeds)  It's time to freshen up the flower beds and get out the lawn chairs.

Please email me anytime.  Take care.  Kathy

Jen,

Thanks for the great advice. I had all of my alpaca in inner pastures with an outer pasture with llamas, a donkey and 2 horses. I also had a llama in with my girls, luckily she is okay. I always wanted to get at least 2 livestock dogs, but I have heard so many tell that is it extreamly hard to find working dogs. I don't have the finances to keep trying to find the right ones. If anyone out there have 2 working dogs available for a reasonable price, please let me know. We are working on our fences now. My land is hilly so it is hard to get the gates level at the bottoms. Any suggestions? I will have girls again. One way or the other. You all have given me so much encouragement, how could I not have the courage to try again? I will always miss my girls, 2 were born here on my farm and one of those was expecting her first cria next month. I will include a few pics of them in the photo section in their memory. I miss the kisses everyday now, I miss sitting
in the barn with them after a hectic day. But I will get more girls and try again. If anyone has any available at a good price, please let me know. And again, I cannot say how much it means to me to have all of you as family.

Wendy:

So sorry to hear about your loss. I would be devastated.. . Your poor poor girls! Don't give up with the insurance company. They likely have a policy to say NO a number of times. I would just make it a policy of your own to call or write them EVERY DAY if necessary until they relent. That is what insurance is for. As a matter of fact, write them a letter telling them exactly what you want/ expect out of the situation... . Here's what happened, here's all the suporting documents, here's how much she was insured for, I will be expecting a check within 2 weeks....I am confident that you will handle this matter expeditiously and respectfully. ....sincerely. ....etc.etc. I believe very much in The Law of Attraction (basically energy follows thought OR you get more of what you focus on) in all aspects of my life. When it comes to matters such as these, focus on the outcome that you WANT. Give THAT outcome all of your attention, energy and focus and you will be
amazed at how the energy will shift. The insurance company WILL pay. The deals out there are AMAZING and you will be able to get 2-3 more healthy females for the price of the ONE that was insured.

This being said, in terms of replacing your females (understanding that they were unique and loved and irreplaceable) ..... focus on the outcome you want in this department as well. Ex. I want to find 3 healthy, high quality bred females for free of a very low price within the next 2 months... There are so many people in financial distress everywhere, you never know what kind of great deal you might get. People are getting great deals EVERY DAY in EVERY part of the country. I have seen situations where people couldn't care for their animals anymore and basically "gave" the whole herd to a friend of mine for 1/2 the profits... You might find someone willing to give half shares in an animal in exchange for YOU keeping the animals and taking care of them. Put the energy out there for what you want and see what comes back.

The forums and lists are a great place to post your wants, make sure you post on as many as you can, craigs list, local farmers bulletins, alpaca nation....do a google search for distress sales. Ask others to keep their ears open for you and forward you any leads. Advertise that you are willing to take care of animals in exchange for shares of cria etc... You never know who will be willing to help OR who needs help...

In the meantime - as was suggested, you need to figure out where the dogs got in and do something to prevent further attacks. LGD's are a good way to go. I love mine.

Best to you!
