Any of the big, full feature books by Fowler or Hoffman and as
Frosting on the cake : a Subscription to International Camelid
Quarterly (a personal must read in my library).

Aw Rachelle, I am so sorry. Brings tears to my eyes. It doesn't matter the species, losing anyone you love is a terrible heartache that you never, ever get over entirely. It's an integral part of us forever, and that's a good thing cause it means that we have had and taken the chance to love deeply.

I had to put two old horses down last year and it almost killed me.  I had the pleasure of having them own me for almost all their lives.  One was 28 and one was 31, the longest relationships I've ever had.  With the 31 year old, I was preparing for that day for years and it still wasn't any easier.  I really thought it would be, but it wasn't.  I had to put her down in a very stressful situation one morning and an hour later the contractors arrived to start the first day's work on our bathrooms.  I was forced to pretend I was okay all day. 
 
We haven't lost an alpaca yet but that will be SO hard.  They are all members of our family.  We have no human children and I always tell people we inter-species adopt.  : )

So sorry, Rachelle.  : (   Whenever you think of him, just remember only the good times and picture him happy and healthy.  You took care of him to the end and did the final, selfless caring act for him and I know he's grateful for that.
 
On another note, I do a feral cat rescue and trapped a VERY sick tiny feral kitten today (just a bad secondary infection from a cold, we tested him for everything and he's negative).  I took him to the vet anyway - an ALL day ordeal.  I got home at 10:30pm.  I'm crossing my fingers for him.
