Re: [AlpacaTalk] cria coats?

I've purchased some excellent dog coats at a very reasonable price and they
have worked well for my crias.

I've found them at several sites, here's one, I've used the weatherbeeta
brand and found them excellent. I have them in sizes from 16 inch to 22
inch for smallest crias and a few 26 inch for the ones that are a few months
old already.

If you check a few pet supply sites you can find some good sales, I've paid
about 12.00 for a winter weight coat that normally went for 28.

I've also used them as a rough pattern for making my own with quilted fabric
and velcro.

Hope this helps

Re: [AlpacaTalk] cria coats?

I have heard others use kids vests from yard sales and whatnot. Never tried that, but heard it works in a pinch...

[AlpacaTalk] furless legs

<<Hi Lysa,
The lack of fiber could be from sitting in water a lot. In the South,
we have some that rot their fiber off with multiple belly baths to
keep them cool. Some will sit in ANY puddle or pooled water location.
That will rot it off. >>

My shortfurred legs girl does love to stand or lie in any water she can
find. I water mine in 5 gal buckets. I noticed after she came to live
with us that the alpacas' water buckets were always muddy. This had
never happened before and I was totally puzzled as to what was going on.
No matter how many times a day I would change their water it always
ended up shortly thereafter muddy. Then one day I happened to see the
new girl standing with one front leg in the bucket, then she would
switch legs! It was too funny. She doesn't seem to do it much anymore,
except in the dead heat of summer. I also keep a kiddy pool with water
in it for the ducks and she will lay whatever of her body she can get in
that little pool, chasing the ducks out. None of my others do this. I
am in the South. In the summer I have taken to just spraying them all
down (bellies and legs) while I am doing their water. At first they
didn't like it, but now they line up to get sprayed; the males will turn
their tail end towards the water and lift their tails LOL. It is so
funny watching them shift around to get just the right area sprayed down.

This is most likely what caused her to not have any fiber on her legs.
That has not been the case since she has been with me, but I am in N GA
and she came from S GA where it is considerably hotter and she probably
had a pond or such to stand around in all day.

Warmly, Janice
