RE: [AlpacaTalk] Developing a market for fleece -New Zealand

Hi Mandy,

We live in New Zealand and we do the same thing with the fleece from 125
alpacas that we did when we had two, six, ten and twenty alpacas. We pool
the different colours with other breeders, have it spun into yarn, and sell
it on TradeMe (like EBay). We divide up the yarn in the same ratio as our
contribution to the pool. In other words, if we put in 5% of the raw
fleece, we get 5% of the processed yarn.

Of course, nobody is interested in processing anything with a micron of 27
or greater. We have to find other things to do with such coarse fibre
(duvets, dog blankets, felting, insulation, etc.).

Another option is to simply sell your finer fleece (less than 24 micron) to
someone like Linda Blake (NZ Southern Alpacas) or others who are interested
in buying such fleece.

Hope that helps you?

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Developing a market for fleece -New Zealand

Hi everyone - I hope no-one from NZ reads this because I am worried
there maybe people here working on this and are already on the way to
solving the problem!

I only have 2 alpaca and now in my study have two fleeces. What do I
do with them in New Zealand home of top quality merino sheep and
angora goats?

Although i quickly state I have not researched this issue thoroughly,
it seems there is not really a market for alpaca fleece here. Alpaca
breeders with greater than 75 alpaca - mostly white - can sell their
fleeces, but those of us with only two can't readily sell.

Is this a world-wide thing? Can someone please give me some pointers
on how to develop a market for small quantities of fleece?
Thanks
Mandy

[AlpacaTalk] Alpaca literature

Hi - I am new to the alpaca thing and therefore do not know what to
read, who are credible authors etc. I was wondering if there is
anywhere I can access a list of alpaca publications that have been
published following some type of peer-review? Basically, a
bibliography of alpaca publications - is there such a thing? If not,
maybe a list of references at the back of a recently published text
book would do - as long as the text book has a global target audience -
some texts tend to be very country-of-publication focussed.

Thanks
Mandy

[AlpacaTalk] Downed Llama boy

Dearest friends,

As some of you may know….I was as going to do massage on a downed Llama
boy just south of me today. I was asked by several of you to let you
know "how it went". Unfortunately, this boy suffered greatly through
the night and is being put down as I write this. He is simply beyond
rehabilitation due to malnutrition. I spoke with the rescuer this
morning and he (the rescuer is doing okay). The vet is going to do a
necropsy on site.

Neglect is a miserable thing…and it is the animals that suffer.

In honor of this boy…please hug your animals today and say a little
prayer for peace for this boy.
