[AlpacaTalk] D.E.

I know we have recently discussed DE here and I have a question to those
of you who use it, if you don't mind.

After our discussion here I decided to add it to my overall feeding and
parasite control program. No one carried it around here locally but my
feed store offered to order some for me and said that someone else had
also asked them about it. They had never heard of it before. I
emphasized and re-emphasized at every step along the way "food grade
only". When it finally came in, they loaded it in my car for me. I
didn't look at it until I got it home to unload.
I was uncomfortable with the label. No where on the bag did it actually
state "food grade". It had a lot of words like "conditioning agent"
catalyst something, carriers, (but nothing about swimming pool filters).
It does say it can be added to feed as a carrier.
I called the feed store before I took it out of my trunk and they called
the rep again just to confirm and he confirmed that what I had was food
grade. So I accepted that, but I just still didn't feel totally
convinced. I finally had some time on a reasonably nice day this week
end to finally dust down the chicken area and add it to their feed.

The other night by sheer coincidence I picked up a book that was lying
around and started flipping through it. This is a huge book - a
resource book for homesteaders. I happened upon a paragraph about DE and
the importance of food grade. The author gave some company names and
contact info. Perma-guard was one of them that had a website. So
after a bit of reading there my question to those of you that use DE,
what does your bag say? How common is it to end up with non food grade
DE? Is there really that much difference between types i.e., brands?
Perma-guard claims that other brands have a lot of sediment and clay and
residues and also talks about the benefits of fresh water DE over
saltwater DE. That make a # of different products with DE as the main
ingredient, as well as just the straight DE. The price is reasonable,
but the shipping is more than the product, making it quite expensive.

I haven't gone so far as to feed any of what I purchased to my
livestock.....well it is on the chix feed come to think of it. For some
reason I still just don't feel totally comfortable with it. I'd love to
here that the bags you use say similar things to what this bag says. I
thought it was expensive at $45 for 50#, but that is a whole lot less
than this Perma-guard would be.

Thanks!
Janice in NW GA

You just EXPECTED us to figure out what you wanted us to see?

If it had been up to me when your unsigned, no info other than the URL, mail hit the group, I would have deleted you and your mail from the group. And, if you were to rejoin, and had you wanted to know why, you would have been told that I felt it was spam, since there was no sig or other info provided.

I did go to the URL. I did not see any video, but then I am not psychic enough to know that I was supposed to.

Hmm. Funny, that's my sister's farm name, that she reserved with ARI
several years ago.

And please, did you miss the discussion on advertising? Not to
mention the basic rules of the group? No advertising, including
pasting your URL with no content in the post.

Finally, I did follow your link, and was met with a blank page.

Annoying.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Thought I would likr to share this with you, now Pet Peeves

As stated, my sister reserved it in 2004 and for some years
afterward. Maybe you could tell us why you didn't reserve it when you
started your farm? Perhaps because the name was in use that time?

Best regards,
Heather

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Thought I would likr to share this with you, now Pet Peeves

Hi Don,
It is true, my sister let her domain name registration expire. It is
also true that in 2004, "stardustalpacas.com" was registered to her.

As I previously stated, my sister and mother share an AOBA membership.
That searchable farm and ranch locator on AOBA only lists those who
pay extra to be included there, so very few farms will come up on
that search feature. I know mine won't. If there's some other search
feature, please give me the link, because I can't find it.

ARI lists only my sister as owning the BREEDER ID of "stardust". Same
as I own "white lotus", and "west wind ltd". No one else is allowed
to use that in their animal naming. If you tried to reserve
"Stardust" or "Stardust Alpacas" as your breeder identifier with ARI,
you would not be able to do so.

Yeah, it's funny the way ARI applies rules sometimes, but not always.
And capriciously as well. Like when I was searching for a new farm
name because of all those other "West Wind"s, I thought "Trade Winds"
Alpacas would be a nice farm name. But they wouldn't let me reserve
that because some named a gelding "Tradewind". Lame? I think so.

You also won't find my farm name on AlpacaNation. Turns out it was a
huge waste of money.

What can I tell you about your web search, my search of "stardust
alpacas" showed many listings with "Stephanie Zeleny, Stardust
Alpacas" in the result. Pages of them.

[AlpacaTalk] Thought I would likr to share this with you, now Pet Peeves

Heather:

It does seem that you came across again with your usual forthright
communication style that many find offensive (I'm often accused of being a
bit too blunt as well). I did a little research, and here is what I found.

1) ICANN says that "stardustalpacas.com" is not a registered domain.
Not to anyone. (No history is available, so I can't tell if it ever was
registered.)

2) AOBA has a farm name search feature, and according to that search
neither "stardust", "stardust alpacas", "stardustalpacas", or "star dust
alpacas" is a registered AOBA farm. There is a Star Dust Ranch in Champlin,
MN.

3) I tried to check with ARI but their offices are already closed and I
couldn't find a farm name search feature on their site. In any case, there
may be many farm names that have "star dust" as part of their name, so it is
completely reasonable that other farms would have similar breeder IDs to
what you say your sister reserved. Our farm name has the word "fleece" in
it - should we try to bar all other farms from referring to fleece?

4) AlpacaNation doesn't show any farms with Stardust or "Star Dust" as
the start of their farm name.

5) As a final result I did a web search for "stardust alpacas". I
found

a. There is a stardust-alpacas.com in NE Ohio that would seem to
indicate a farm name of Stardust Alpacas but has no links to AOBA, ARI, or
any affiliate.

b. There are a lot of alpacas that have the word "stardust" in their
name.

c. There is a Stephanie Zeleny who posted a tiny "hello" post on an
Australian alpaca web site in July, 2007, and has "Stardust Alpacas" and
"Creswell, OR" in her signature line. (This link was well into page 2 of
the search results with the search engine I used - not an obvious match.)

If I were starting a new farm today none of the normal ways of checking for
a similar name would seem to indicate any collision if I chose Stardust
Alpacas, Star Dust Alpacas, or anything like that other than to the OH farm.
As far as I can tell your sister may have accidently copied the name of the
alpaca farm in OH. I think in this case your pet peeve is misplaced.
Certainly someone who takes exactly the same name as an existing farm (where
that farm name can easily be found using the above checks) should know
better, but you can't fault someone for taking a name they had no way to
know that someone else thought they had.

p.s., I think it would behoove both of us to take a few courses in
netiquette.

Pet Peeves

Sigh. Whatever.

Another pet peeve is when someone tells me that what I know as fact
is not true. Like knowing for fact that my sister reserved the
breeder ID "Stardust" in 2004, and that she is an AOBA member, which
Mike Sias is not as of this date. And that in 2004 she registered
"stardustalpacas.com" with icann.

Buh-bye then, Mike. No, actually I did not expect an apology. It was
clear that you had no regard for group rules and nettiquette.

If I'm crazy because I know what I know and I expect people to
identify themselves on the group, and expect people to follow the
rules that they've requested, so be it.

Heather "Crazy" Zeleny
