I know we have recently discussed DE here and I have a question to those
of you who use it, if you don't mind.
After our discussion here I decided to add it to my overall feeding and
parasite control program. No one carried it around here locally but my
feed store offered to order some for me and said that someone else had
also asked them about it. They had never heard of it before. I
emphasized and re-emphasized at every step along the way "food grade
only". When it finally came in, they loaded it in my car for me. I
didn't look at it until I got it home to unload.
I was uncomfortable with the label. No where on the bag did it actually
state "food grade". It had a lot of words like "conditioning agent"
catalyst something, carriers, (but nothing about swimming pool filters).
It does say it can be added to feed as a carrier.
I called the feed store before I took it out of my trunk and they called
the rep again just to confirm and he confirmed that what I had was food
grade. So I accepted that, but I just still didn't feel totally
convinced. I finally had some time on a reasonably nice day this week
end to finally dust down the chicken area and add it to their feed.
The other night by sheer coincidence I picked up a book that was lying
around and started flipping through it. This is a huge book - a
resource book for homesteaders. I happened upon a paragraph about DE and
the importance of food grade. The author gave some company names and
contact info. Perma-guard was one of them that had a website. So
after a bit of reading there my question to those of you that use DE,
what does your bag say? How common is it to end up with non food grade
DE? Is there really that much difference between types i.e., brands?
Perma-guard claims that other brands have a lot of sediment and clay and
residues and also talks about the benefits of fresh water DE over
saltwater DE. That make a # of different products with DE as the main
ingredient, as well as just the straight DE. The price is reasonable,
but the shipping is more than the product, making it quite expensive.
I haven't gone so far as to feed any of what I purchased to my
livestock...
reason I still just don't feel totally comfortable with it. I'd love to
here that the bags you use say similar things to what this bag says. I
thought it was expensive at $45 for 50#, but that is a whole lot less
than this Perma-guard would be.
