Re: [AlpacaTalk] a bi of early help

I haven't read everyone else's replies but T can tell you that when we let our alpaca out on the long grass they go crazy, not only with the rolling about and pronking and merrymaking but they get right down to eating the very long grass. Don;'t believe all you hear. We were also told alpaca won't go into barns when we started out.

I have read they won't like long grass , and they seem to stay away from longer areas of the paddock they're in. Will the alpacas cope with long cuttings if I try mowing it on my little tractor (I have no way of collecting a first cut)? What should i do - can't get a farmer in to top it as the slope is too severe.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] a bi of early help

Hi David - easiest way would be to offer grazing to a couple of neighbour's cattle  ( if you have some ) to get it down - we keep a few steers to run through after the alpacas to clean up the clumps they don't graze around the dung piles, and perfectly OK to put the alpacas back in afterwards, and the pats break down over time - no need to remove. Climatically we are prone to facial excema where we are, so we never top paddocks and leave debris which increases risk.

Typically, gelding takes place at or after 18 months of age.  You want the alpaca to be fully mature so you don't interrupt bone development which is triggered by hormonal changes as they mature.

I am wondering, at what age do you have a male alpaca castrated by a vet? Thank you.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] a bi of early help

Hi David:
I start cutting when the alpacas quit eating the grass.

I set my riding mower to it's highest setting so that the alpaca
still have enough to grip and munch.

I am also unfmilure with the term "petrol strimmer". What
exactly is it?

Re: [AlpacaTalk] a bi of early help

Hi David - basically that's all I have to work with too - a lawn tractor and a string trimmer.  I just mow pastures as often as I can and the new grass grows up through the cuttings.  They do just fine on it.  While they prefer the shorter grass, sometimes it's better to let the grass grow to 6-10 inches just because parasites typically stay closer to the ground, so it may mitigate any parasite problems you might develop by making the alpacas eat a bit higher on the stem.
