Re: [AlpacaTalk] Speaking Of Pronking!~

Its my favorite time of day, dusk. I stop whatever I'm doing and watch them
pronk. One of our five year old females is the best at it even when she's
hugely pregnant, she scares me then.

That's actually how we fell in love with alpacas, watching crias pronk. I
went to buy some orchard grass advertised in a local newspaper and low and
behold, it was at an alpaca farm! AND we arrived right at dusk, it was magical.
We were hooked and now here we are, four years later. : )

Re: [AlpacaTalk] more questions

Alfalfa is also too high for horses but they do okay on it. I don't feed it
to the older ones and I mix it with grass hay for all my horses.

I wouldn't feed alfalfa to the alpacas by itself but I would think that
mixed with a lower quality hay like bermuda or lower-quality pasture grass it
should equal the protein level of orchard grass. Anyone?

Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: fencing questions

That's right Mary Jane!

And I was just reminded of that multi champion suri Seattle Mist, who
got a rear leg caught jumping a fence... it broke, the leg, not the
fence... by the time they discovered him it was too late to save the
leg and it had to be amputated. Luckily he learned to use the
prosthetic leg and can even breed so I understand! But inadequate
fencing is very dangerous. Certainly an ounce of prevention, while
possibly costly, can certainly be worth more than a pound of cure.
(If we'd just done it right the first time...)

Haha! Yes, that boy of ours who jumped the 4' fence... well, we had
to take down the whole run of 4' and replace it with 6', so we had to
buy twice the amount of fencing. We could have used 5' but this boy
hated the other one so much that we thought, let's do it really right
this time! Ain't no way an alpaca's gonna get over a 6' fence!

Oh yes, and we feed 1 cup Mazuri Alpaca Growth and Repro pellets once a day
mixed with some (one handful per 4-5 alpacas) loose Stillwater Alpaca
Minerals to the pregnant and lactating females only. The males don't need pellets,
just the loose minerals, which our boys eat plain.

Blend. Evans Blend E is also a good one.

We don't feed grain at our farm, totally against it as it's not what
they evolved to eat. Corn, especially, acidifies the gut and kills
off the microbes in the gut which are what really feed the alpaca.

There are many alpaca pellets out there, but most contain corn,
grain, or other agricultural by-products we prefer not to feed.
Brewer's dried grains...

My current preference is to use 1 cup of alfalfa pellet, 1/2 oz
Golden Blend, 1 oz whole flax seed. Mix it up with a bit of wheat
germ oil or rice bran oil to make the flax seed and mineral stick to
the pellet. This would be a ration for one alpaca, for one day.

I have no experience with anything but orchard grass. We feed 2nd
cutting orchard grass hay. As far as what's available in your area,
your local feed store can help, and local alpaca breeders will be
more than happy to give you help.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] hi from a new member

Sorry, they have no TOP teeth. I'm losing it. : ) I think your alpacas
will get used to the sheep and goats. Some are kickers though, especially
when pregnant or nursing a cria. We have one that is a total B _ _ _ _ when
she's pregnant with a male cria, but sweet as a lamb when pregnant with a female
cria. Once she delivers a male, she is back to her sweet old self again.
They are definitely characters and each has their own personality.

You may want to check out your local farm vets to see if you have any who
treat alpacas. If not, find the closest one and rely on this site which is
what I do. It is INVALUABLE. (Thanks, Heather!)

Hi Susan,
Thank you, I didn't realize they have no bottom teeth like goats. And now
I'll be prepared if I see them scrunching up their face or neck wrestling,
lol.
I can't wait till they settle in and feel more at home here. I have 2 males
and 2 females, a mother and 5 month old daughter. The males are separated.
I still don't know the age of the mother, but she has never been around
sheep from what I'm guessing. I finally let my sheep out with them under
supervision to see how it would go. My 2 year old pet sheep Little Bear,
whom we
bottle raised, went up to investigate, slowly walking up to mama with a
curious
look on her face. Mama promptly turned around and kicked her right in the
mouth. After much babying and spoiling Little Bear, we discovered she is
perfectly fine and didn't get hurt (as she showed us by happily munching
cookies
afterwards), but now she is staying clear away from the alpacas. Can't blame
her
there. We actually decided to put everyone back up and keep them separated
for a few more days until they are more used to each other through the fence.
Do you think mama alpaca will ever get used to my sheep? She clearly does
not like them. I have a few goats too but they are too afraid to go anywhere

near the alpacas.
I'm imagining they will all get used to each other in time.

Welcome, Pam! You will find alpacas very therapeutic, there is something
almost spiritual about hanging out with them. They "pronk" (jump and run
around) at dusk and dawn (at least the younger ones do) and we sometimes
take a
glass of wine out and just sit and enjoy them. I like to give our alpacas
baby
carrots as treats, they love them. Remember, they have no bottom teeth in
front, so you have to cut up their treats for them.

A pointer - when they neck wrestle for feeding or status position, the
"loser" will scrunch up his/her face, open the mouth and look like they are
dying.
It really scared me until a fellow breeder told me they call it "Pouty
Face". They are so docile you'd never know they were having a disagreement
otherwise. LOL
