Can someone tell me the advantage to having an AOBA-affiliated show?  I don't get it.

There are options to AOBA certified shows. Of course, there's always ALSA, but then we have the International thing, which I have very little knowledge of, except the IAO which is always a great success as far as I know, and draws the best of the best in the country.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] white pus-like substance in cria

Thanks, Susan, I did see that, we have the Evans' 2nd Edition.  This really doesn't look anything like diarrhea but a ropey, stringy mucus or pus-like substance.  I'm thinking she may have a bladder or uterine infection since Mom is prone but negative right now.  Mom does not have mastitis, I checked that too.  Other than that, baby is healthy and normal.  I can't figure it out and I'm going to take both in to the vet in the morning if there is no improvement.  Evans says SMZ's but I want to make sure.  Thanks, everyone - it sure is nice having this forum in emergencies!

Appy baby boy born this morning is doing great - now I'm wondering which division appys show in?  Multi?  He's white with a bunch of brown splotches, some tiny, some larger.  I probably won't know until shearing if he's a true appy or a multi.  Has anyone had experience with figuring this color out?  I have a few pix I can send privately.  Thanks!

I just checked the Evans manual and it states there that the 2 most common diarrheas in 2-8 wk olds are coccidia and corona virus.  I might be confused/not remembering/in la-la land...but seems like I heard corona virus produces a white diarrhea. In any case, if I"m right -- and I don't know -- Dr. Long says it is usually self limiting, probably sheds more in the early stages of the diarrhea, is difficult to diagnose and requires quickly getting the specimen to the lab. He further says it is usually self limiting and requires supportive measures. The Evans manual says a little more, but I guess I'd call the vet. If you have the new edition of the Evans Manual, it's toward the end of the cria related section.

Good luck and keep us posted! I'm real curious what you find out!

RE: [AlpacaTalk] new cria

Congratulations Susan!!!

Isn’t it lovely to get the color you want?  Our luck has been lots of lovely colors---but not much predictability…however, I will not complain so long as every cria is healthy and attached to mom’s teats before nightfall.

Woo - hoo!  After five years of breeding for multis and getting nothing but TB's last year, we woke up this morning to find a med. fawn/white APPY male cria!  Very nice luster and conformation.  Just had to spread the news.  Hooray!!!

Hi - just went out to check on the new boy and our 3 week old cria went to the poo pile and before and after she peed, some long white stringy stuff came out.  I smelled it and it doesn't smell infected or like pus, but I couldn't tell where it was coming from either (anus or vulva).  Her dam is the hardest to transport and we have no vet who makes ranch calls.  She looks fine other than this and I'm going to take her temp.  Any other suggestions?

[AlpacaTalk] Cria killing in S.W. Ohio

I've had several conversations with a reporter that has been covering
the recent cria killing in S.W. Ohio.
She asked me today if there was anyone else I knew that had experienced this.

The reporter would be interested in talking to a few more owners that have suffered the senseless loss of an alpaca at human hands.
She would be interested in speaking with them.
You may contact us at info1@tri-valleyalpacas.com

Hi:
I've had several conversations with a reporter that has been covering
the recent cria killing in S.W. Ohio.
She asked me today if there was anyone else I knew that had experienced this.
I told her alpacatalk would be the venue to find out.
Would you mind posting this for me? (I still cannot post on the site)

A big thank you to 114 breeders, suppliers and friends who have contributed
$4,610 to the Alpaca Reward Fund, in amounts ranging from $5 to $1,000.
Our newest contributors are listed at the end of this email.  The total
reward for information leading to the murderer(s) of Tana Ward's cria,
Arianne has now been increased to $7,500.  If I haven't received your
contribution, please visit these links:

In the spirit of the month of February, I am appealing to the entire
alpaca community to "have a heart" and join in the effort to increase the
Alpaca Reward Fund to a level that will continue to garner publicity and
eventually ferret out the slime responsible for this mindless crime.
Please look at the picture of little Arianne in the above links.  Imagine
Tana's shock... and, the horror of Arianne's mother, Ariel, as she
undoubtedly witnessed the senseless murder of her baby.  Please help us
continue to increase the Reward Fund and bring the perpetrator(s) of this
crime to justice.

I'm available to take your contribution by credit card any time at

Contributions may be made through PayPal to:  jess@...

Or, mail your contribution, payable to "Alpaca Reward Fund", to the
