An increase in dues would take care of many problems.

There should not be, in my opinion, show division members, marketing
division members, farm members, association members, etc.

Of course, being able to "join" the show division without being a
member only perpetuates the system of multiple forms of membership.

Those that support the current system argue that people that don't
show shouldn't have to pay for something they don't use. That might
harken back to the days of ALSA administration of shows, when the
AOBA membership dues did not cover showing.

However, now the shows are administered by AOBA, the privilege should
be covered under one dues structure.

So then the question becomes, would you pay higher dues if it
provided show and marketing division privileges? If so, how much
higher? $350-500/yr?

Would you vote for a 200% increase in dues if it brought equitable
privilege to all AOBA members?

I know I pay over $600/yr for one organization I belong to, and I
seldom complain about it. I think that AOBA dues are artificially
low, and that all the levels of membership are a way to raise
necessary funds. Even if the marketing division were disbanded I
suspect that current dues would not cover operating expenses.

How would you vote?

I have no idea, it just looks like changes are made without any prior
notice to members. I haven't seen a vote put up to members except
"voting" for board members in ages.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] protecting my herd

I had a LGD and they do bark and scare other "dogs" off but 2" x 4"
non climb field fencing is the best. Big dogs can't climb it and the
alpacas can't hang their heads over it if it's 6' high. I'd put that
on the perimeter. I have 5' and it's working well too.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] protecting my herd

hi Emaly - We have had the best luck with guard llamas - worth their weight in gold - they don't miss a thing - the one and only time a dog got into one of my fields, i had to go in and rescue the dog from where the llama had it cornered - the dog was terrified and covered in the foulest green slime. It never tried to come into my fields again.

we tried a guardian herd dog (great pyrenees) and had nothing but disasters - the darn thing actually ran my alpacas - they hated it - and on top of everything else it destroyed hoses, fences and anything else it could get it's teeth into - then, one day, it decided that my daughter, carrying her baby, was the enemy and i had to keep swinging the hoe at it to keep it off until they could get into the house. That was the end of my patience, and the dog went. I'll take a guardina llama anyday.

how horrible for you to have your alpacas and llamas attacked by dogs - i hope you are successful in finding a way to keep the dogs out - can you appeal to your neighbors to keep their dogs in theri own property? Here, if a dog runs stock, the onus is on the owner to confine the dog or the dog goes.

good luck,

Hello,

After having my llamas and alpacas attacked TWICE by neighboring German
Shepherds, I have realized that I need to make some drastic changes on our
farm. We're planning on running electric fence around the perimeter of the
pastures. I am also considering purchasing an additional guard llama or
LGD. I have one guard llama, but she is getting older, and can't protect
every pasture. For those of you with similar experiences...any
recommendations on how to better protect my herd? We've been extremely
lucky that no one has been killed, and I'd like to keep it that way.

RE: [AlpacaTalk] TN building

John,

I think this is what causes concern for several.

Excerpt from AOBA's 7/22/05 announcement (full text below provided by Jess)
"The best part of this announcement is the cost involved. The rental rates
for this office and similar offices in the immediate area are in the $70,000

to $80,000 per year range."

Yet AOBA's 2006 Auditor valued the property at only $35,390. (page 9 of the
2006 Audit Notes section)

The problem is, what did the board know. Did they know the real value and
then mislead the membership or were they themselves mislead because they
failed to perform due diligence. I agree the gift of even $35k is
wonderful. My concern is two-fold; 1) the pattern of directors failure to
perform even rudimentary level due diligence on most topics 2) the rental
rate was what facilitated the decision to go with our own offices which from
all appearances has cost AOBA a lot more money than using a management
company.

Jerry, Jennifer Orr and myself were the Board members who reviewed the
feasibility of our own offices vs a mgmt company in 2003 when the Hoberts
resigned. Jerry offered the same building at this time as well and it was
rejected.

Hope all is going well. Are you up for re-election with AFCNA this year?
If so are you running again. They've come a long way with your help.

Ana

Minutes
Alpaca Owners & Breeders Association
Board of Directors Meeting
Nashville, TN
Monday & Tuesday, July 11 & 12, 2005

Come to order: Amy called the meeting to order at 8:00 am.

New Office Location: The Board reviewed potential office space for the new
AOBA office. After the walk-through, the Board returned to the meeting room
and discussed the lease offer of a donated three-year non-renewable lease
from Western Reserve and Magical Farms. After discussion on full disclosure;

costs of operations; advantages, disadvantages, and alternatives - Steve
moved to accept the donated 3-year lease from Western Reserve and Magical
Farms. Second by Anthony and motion passed unanimously. Amy will work on
wording for an email blast to the membership.
------------------------------------------------

AOBA membership email blast dated 7/22/05:

"Dear AOBA Members,

As you are aware, the AOBA Board of Directors and Association Headquarters
agreed not to extend the management contract when it expires at the end of
this year. We feel a freestanding office, with our own employees, will best
be able to meet the needs of our membership. The decision was a difficult
one which required a great deal of thought and deliberation but we
unanimously agree it is the right decision for our association, the members
and their future.

With that decision made, the task of locating a future home for the office
began. Board Members recently combined a face to face planning meeting with
a trip to visit a location for the new office. There were several office
spaces available that would have been adequate for our needs, but we were
overjoyed when we found one that is in virtually "move in" condition. It is
located in the southwestern portion of Nashville, Tennessee, approximately 5

miles from the Nashville International Airport (BNA).

The best part of this announcement is the cost involved. The rental rates
for this office and similar offices in the immediate area are in the $70,000

to $80,000 per year range. We have agreed to execute a three year lease
with no cost to AOBA thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the building
owners, Jerry Forstner of Magical Farms and Rob Frost of Western Reserve
Alpaca Farm. When these two members offered the use of the building at no
cost, we closely examined all possibilities, and once assured there was no
possible financial gain for either of them, we felt totally compelled to go
forward with the site as quickly as possible. We thank them both for their
wonderful gift and sincerely appreciate their help in building a strong and
exciting future for our association.

Nashville is an exciting city with plenty of entertainment, hotels, shopping

and fabulous restaurants to enjoy when you come to visit the new office
location. We are thrilled to have this opportunity and hope all of you will
be as pleased with the new office as we are."
----------------------------------------------

The AOBA HQ Nashville office lease arrangement, along with ownership of the
building has been a closely held secret. You must be an AOBA member, visit
the password protected members' site and read the BOD minutes to have access

to the information. The "secret" information was also the subject of an
email blast to AOBA membership on 7/22/05. You just can't trust anyone, not
even the AOBA BOD, to keep a secret any more.

Re: [AlpacaTalk] more on gucky eyes

Hi Wendy,

Since the vet found a scratch, that is probably the total explanation for your eye problem, but sometimes if an alpaca is anemic, underweight, or did not receive enough immunity from mom, then they are more susceptible to whatever comes along. The CBC would check for infection and anemia (CBC = complete blood count), BCP (biochemical profile) checks several other parameters such as liver function, sugar levels, protein levels, the IgG (Immunoglobulin G) checks for the immunity or antibodies he has to fight infection, and the PCR checks for an illness called BVDV or bovine viral diarrhea virus. The thyroid is just what it says and is used to make sure he is not hypothyroid. These are all things that could affect his size and his ability to fight infection.

You should body score your little guy and check out how he feels around the ribs and all as well. You body score at the top of his shoulders (withers). You place your hand on top of his spine so that the thumb points down to his left or right and the fingers point down the opposite side. Then you feel to see if to the left and right of his spine caves in, forms a nice inverted "V", or if it is like a table top. If the flesh just to the sides of his spinous processes is caved in, then he is a bit under weight.

You can also feel along the ribs, but this is something that you have to feel several alpacas to get an idea of who is skinny, fat, or just right. If you can easily feel the ribs, and he is really boney, then you may have a little one who is not getting enough nurtition from his momma. The fact that he is running around makes me think that he is probably doing okay though.

I would imagine from what you are describing that this little one is okay, but just had the bad luck of getting scratched, but should he not get better in the next few days, or if he should develop more problems, then I would consider the tests I described above.

Keep us posted!

hi Dar - this BNP ointment is really effective - i was using an opthalmic ointment after i cleaned his eye with cold tea - but the vet explained the BNP is an apthalmic ointment with a broader spectrum - it's a bit frustrating to not be able to get vet attention until things get really bad - but i suppose i should be grateful (and i am) that he came at all - i just came in from putting the ointment in fonzie's eye for the night and now i am ready for my quilt and pillow. What a long day!!.

where are you in Ontario? i will be in Rockland next month - is that at all close?

Hi Wendy,

I am going through a similar issue with our 6 month old boy who had a
difficult delivery and start to life. We have milky clouding of his
eye now after the conjunctiva became inflammed/infected. I use BNP
ointment (from the vet) in the eye itself and just started him on a
systemic antibiotic. The vet should look at the eye because they can
have a lot of trouble with ulcers with infection. The vet will use
drops that are stained to detect a corneal abbrasion (which can be
painful for them) and timely treatment can prevent vision troubles.
I'm glad your vet is coming. When things go from a little red to
infected the time for tea soaks etc., is over.
